Thread: quatro 15"

    Default quatro 15"

I am currently looking into the quatro 15" sub because I've heard that it works well with HT and it looks like a good deal with the 240 watt amp on sale right now. I will be using it for music as well so I was wondering if the sub performs well musically and produces clean bass. I always heard that 15" subs produce sloppy bass. So I want to avoid that, but at the same time I want the sub to go pretty deep. For everyones' information I just finished a project that this sub will be matched to. I basically copied the noahs that are in the project showcase which consist of the dayton 8" classics. It's my first DIY project and they sound absolutly amazing. I just need more low end. Your help is much appreciated.

Personally, I'm running a pair of 0.7ish Q sealed Q15s under a pair of maggie MMGs, and I'm generally happy. Could be better? Yeah, but it'd take a lot more room, and some more $$$. For a coupla hundred bucks, the combo's darn hard to beat.

(FWIW, Dead, Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, and not a whole heckuva lot of rap, altho the pair o' subs will make picture frames move....)

yeah, I'm not a big rap fan either, but i do listen to everything else and need a sub for movies and waisting my life away on xbox, so i just need a versatile sub for a good price. sounds like the quatro is the answer. thanks for the input!

I agree with bogie, the Q15/240-watter is a great combo, and is VERY hard to beat for the same monetary output.

As for bigger diameter drivers being sloppy, this is just pure bunk. If the drivers is of good design, and the enclosure is as well, and your amp is up to the cause then there is no reason larger drivers cannot sound good. Some of the best subs I have ever heard were the old Aura 1808 monsters....18".

With your experience with the Q15/240, do you think the 240 with 6db of boost would be a good match in a 2.7cuft sealed box?

I'd stick with no boost. 6db boost at 30 hz? Maybe with a 10" woofer that has an F3 of 35hz; no way with with that 15" in a optimal enclosure. Your bass is going to sound tubby and there is a good risk of overexcursion at high levels if you go with the bass boost.

I'd go with the regular 240, not the boost one. With the boost, you have a better chance of overexcursion.

The 15" DVC might be a nice driver to pair with teh boost amp.

I use two in 3.3 cubic feet each, sealed, 65% stuffed.

I just demoed them in my buddy's suburban... and BROKE a window.

    cha-ching!

well I think I'm convinced. what sort of enclosure would you guys recommend. My listening room is about 12 x 10 feet. I would like to have an f3 around 20 hz. I'm not sure if this will happen though in the size of room I have. As you can probably tell I'm pretty new to this. fyi the guy who designed the current speakers I'm using for this system (the Noahs, in the project showcase 8" classics) have an f3 of 34 hz.

That is approximately what I have. I used a four inch full length Precision Port (flared on both ends). I LOVE IT!!
