Thread: Sony DVD Player

    Default Sony DVD Player

    Provided Link: Sony DVD

    Hey guys,

In doing some research I have come across a particular Sony DVD player that seems quite nice. I would be using it for CD playback (via the optical out), SACD playback, and the occasional movie. It seems to be a nice player from looking at the specs, but I was just wondering if any of you had any thoughts on the quality of the product. (I've been leary of Sony in the past, but this seems like a promising one)

    Thanks!

I've got a pair of NC685 DVD/SACD players. Overall, they're okay, but these things will NOT play DVD-Audio disks... Doesn't like the DVD-A Seven Bridges Road on the Eagles Hell Freezes Over either... Why do I have two of 'em? Wanted to only deal with one type of remote for the living room and The Bunker.

This one you found might, but I'd maybe look at some others. Unless you know you're never gonna wanna buy a DVD-A disk... My SACDs sound great... It also didn't wanna play nice with an external DAC, but then again, the internal sounded better to me.

Mine _does_ sound nice - It's got a 96/24 dac build in, and the one you're looking at has a 192/24...

That model dont support DVD-Audio. You can find a universal player in the same price range that still mantains a 192MHz/24-Bit Audio DAC.

I can't help with the Sony, but I've seen some recommendations for the Oppo dv970HD. It has won a lot of "best of's" also and is only $149. Take a look at their site and check out the reviews section.

    Default Get an Oppo

Save yourself $50 and buy a player that will run circles around the Sony (and play dvdA and sacd). I once owned a Sony player (my first) and it was a pile of crap. Video was soft (audio was good), and after about 1.5 yrs of use it stopped playing dvds (would still play cds)

You're paying for the name, that's all. Sony used to be great across their entire product line. Not true anymore. Only some of their stuff still kicks booty.

Check out the $150 oppo. Be sure to go to the video test page. You can see how the various brands and models compare in a lab.

I have a DVP-NS300 and IMO is an excellent DVD/CD player. I know little about the one you're looking at but I have never have had trouble with mine after 5yrs of use.

I heard about this. Wasn't it a transport problem or laser pick-up problem?

Unfortunately for me I found out about the class-action after I sh-t canned the unit.

    Thanks,

The unit hangs, or locks up. A hardware problem with a fix on the net.
Sony, in their generosity is proposing to offer $40 of their goods or a refurbished player (which is no longer available new...think about it) with the "standard" warranty of 90 days.

Default Re Sony, and ? about the OPPO

I don't know the number but I have a 5 disc Sony DVD I have had for 2 1/2 years with no problem on either sound or picture.

However, the OPPO tempts me and I have birthday and Christmas money to spend. Risking derision, I ask: will it play MP3 disks? I have burned such disks for background listening at dinner parties or while reading -- not for critical listening -- and it would be nice to still be able to use them.

Haven't tried it, but oppo says it will.

In spite of the fact that I'm a very happy owner of the dv 970hd, I'm intrigued with the new model, the dv 981hd because of the Faroudja video processing. Seems they took the best of the 970 (audio section) and the best of the 971 (video section w/Faroudja processing) and created the 981. Mind you, the 970 has video that is a giant killer.

I puchased the 970 sight unseen. Best a/v purchase I ever made. I had an entry-level Denon at home for a week. Paid the same price as the oppo. The video stunk (audio was good) with the Denon. Night and day difference in picture quality. Even though the native resolution on my projector is only 480p, an 82" picture looks stunning on this player.

Go burn your xmas and b-day money! You won't regret it!
