Default Pair of speakers for college music for $75?

I just want to build 2 speakers to use in my room for music only. I am an 18yr old college student so I like to play music loud and typically rock/rap music. I bought the Dayton 10" Home Sub about 2 months ago and I want to build something to compliment it. Size is not a problem. I got $75 for Christmas, and I am highly project oriented, so building is not a problem. If you could recommend a design with speakers/crossover/box that would be great! Thanks a lot -Merry Christmas - Zachery

That's a tall order for kit speakers Zach. $75 for crossovers and drivers and cabinets?

Let me suggest you go and get the Insignia's at Best Buy and apply Zaph's mod to smooth the response.

Pair of da175/ HiVi K1 MT's would fit the bill. Hey Pete S., didn't you have a 5 component xo for that combo?

Even some BR-1 clones would probably be doable. The -070 tweeter is $11 and the -605 woofer is like $13, CRAZY. If you found a buddy to partner up on an order you can get free shipping for I think a week or two yet (total has to be over $99 though).

Default Try my "Audinum" project! *PIC*

1.2 ltrs. 1" x 3 3/8"long port, bottom-fired. XOver must be as small as possible! It has to fit through the woofer-hole. The woofer hole has to be notched between the screw holes. This is so the wires and magnet can pass through the baffle, and then rotate to screw in. .5" mdf construction. The dcr of the main-inductor can be adjusted, but that is what the one used is measured at. I used mylar caps, ferrite-core inductors, and 10W resistors. Center distance of the drivers is 2.75", tweeter is flushed, woofer is surface-mounted. These have a very BIG sound, and will meld well with a subwoofer. Normally, reverse the tweeter polarity instead of the woofer, but I reversed the woofer due to ease of switching leads. These are very compact, and do well with most music. I would use the high-pass on the subamp (if there is one) if you drive them really hard.

    Wolf

Agreed, the BR1's have a bit more output, and you really can't beat those driver prices. I may consider building a pair for mum...

You can get decent sound with those drivers and a stock Linkwitz-Riley crossover ( using stock values at 2000 Hz 5 uF cap, 1.3 mH inductor on both woofer and tweeter), adding a stock Zobel (47 uF cap, 8 ohm resistor) and a stock L Pad (2 to 3 ohms series resistor, about 20 ohm parallel resistor). Use nonpolar electrolytic caps and regular wirewound resistors, and you will be close to 75 bucks. Not as nice as the BR-1, but perfectly passable for your use.

The DA175-K1 project is over his $75 budget (~$100/pr). That's why I suggested the Insignia + Zaph mod.

Right now, the tweeters are on sale for 12 bucks, so it's about $60 in drivers. For the Xover, the mylar caps are most-likely less than a dollar, the coils are about $3-5 if you use a Jantzen 20gauge .5mH(IIRC). The resistors are about a dollar, or less. The notch inductor is an RF choke from Radio Shack. Measured 100uH(.1mH), and is about 2 bucks, IIRC. It didn't cost that much! I may have $80 in them since I bought the cabinets and added baffles. If you build it, or have other questions, feel free to ask here, or e-mail me.
    Thanks for the interest,
    Wolf

    Default I just built....

I just built a nice sounding stereo single-box system using two of the dayton 6.5" classic woofers ($13.00 each), two of the dayton 3/4" neodymium dome tweeters ($5 each approx.), and a simple first order XO at about 2400Hz (one cap and one inductor per channel, so it's cheap, about $15 for all XO components total) I built it into a single box for portability since that was one of my goals, and it also saves on time and money. It has two 1 1/8" ports.
Not perfect, but it's loud, cheap, and simple. Pretty thick in the midrange where it counts too, and some decent bass. You could use the same design except with the DA175 7" aluminum woofers and it would be fuller in the low end with better detail, but they're still out of stock.
You can kick it up to a 2nd order linkwitx XO at 2400Hz and still stay pretty cheap, you'd need four of these: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...=255-048&DID=7

For the first order buttorwroth, it's two of these: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...Number=027-426

Default You're going to hurt that tweeter....

...unless you keep it above 3200Hz, 12dB. It isn't that resilient, or robust, but it sounds good when done right.

to just skip the coils, 'cause they're not really doing anything anyhow, except sucking up one dB maybe. Been there. A Zobel costs about one $.
