OT: Help! -computer woes again...
This time apparently connected to my running software to keep it from being contaminated…
After running AdAware, and RegistrySmart, attempting to access the internet on either Firefox or IE result in a message that the browsers cause a conflict with an “msafd.dll” file. Going back to an earlier registry file 'fixed' my sound card, that hasn't worked since soon after installing RegistrySmart. -And it seems to have issues as well. Crashing if I ask it to replace the registry file with any but the oldest one.
Anyone heard of this msadf.dll file? I don't see it on my machine here at work, but its XP as opposed to ME at home.
Any savvy suggestions while I wait for an email reply from RegistrySmart?
Thanks in advance...

Hi Curt,
I Googled the dll and here's what I came up with:
Information saved in the DLL itself:
Howto display it: Press Ctrl+Enter on DLL name, then click on 'Version' tab and compare with values listed below. Please keep in mind that malicious software often saves here fake identification or author name (see disclaimer below).
Author: Microsoft Corporation
Description: Microsoft Windows Sockets 2.0 Service Provider
Internal name: msafd.dll
Information about Copyright: Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Original file name: msafd.dll
Product version: 5.1.2600.0
Description:
Security risk: unknown
Description: This is a core DLL needed for Windows operating system. You should not delete it
Part of OS: YES
Designed for OS: Win NT 32
Based on some of the Google entries, it seems that the error is related to spyware. It could be time for a format and a reinstall of the operating system. Will XP run on your PC? It's the only way to go if you have the horsepower, memory and disk space to run it properly.

Curt,
This is part of the Windows Sockets 2.0 transport service. It is needed as part of the TCP/IP protocol. You have typed it two different ways above and that may be why you are not finding it on your work computer... msafd.dll rather than msadf.dll.
It is a system dll and it may require a system restore to get it back if it has been overwritten or removed by some other application.

I wish I could access it at home to try it. -Looks like it could work...

Re: -on my son's laptop tonight...
What operating system are you using? XP Pro or XP Home? Find a computer with the same operating system as yours, copy this file onto a floppy disk (it is only around 106 KB in size) and install it in your machine in the SYSTEM32 folder.
If your only problem is that missing file this should solve it.
Or, did you try running SFC from the "Run" command? It might find that this file is missing and ask you for your XP CD to copy it from the CD onto your hard drive.

Re: OT: Help! -computer woes again...
Curt, upgrade to either Windows 98 or to Windows XP
Windows Me is a headache in hiding if it's not making you wince in pain. Pretty much no one really supports it, software probably isn't tested on it... it's one of those things Microsoft probably wishes they could make disappear permanently.
And, if you practice safe and smart browsing, all the anti-spyware stuff can actually make your computer worse off.
Not really helpful to the situation at hand. I have rarely found recovery to be faster or better than a simple fresh install from the ground up.

I'm hearing this advice a lot. Chris.
I had no idea that ME, which at the time I bought it, was supposed to 'fix' 98SE, would end up being such a pig. Oh,well, time to get with the new millennium, I guess.
