    Default Polished copper Veneer? *PIC*

Would veneering a speaker box in copper, or any metal have a negative effect on the sound by possible producing more reflections?

Assuming you mean exterior copper, I don't see how it would be acoustically more reflective than say, a high gloss black cabinet. It would be a bi#ch to maintain though. (Unless you like tarnish!)

This is a prime example of why someones junk is another person treasure. Nothing beat's the aged old Patina of weathered copper.

A few layers of clearcoat and you'd never lose the shine.

The only thing you need to worry about is getting a uniform layer of adhesive, just like any veneer. Smoothness isn't much of an attibute one way or another. The shape of the baffle has a far larger effect on the sound than the texture of its surface.

Are you planning on sealing it or letting it oxidize?

Check these guys out - some very neat materials designed for surface application. I did my cooktop with a sheet of roofing copper (it ain't real easy) and had to build a brake to get nice edges, and getting the entire surface to adhere to the substrate is verrry tough! If that was loose at all or had a void space, significant buzzing would be right around the corner. You can also buy copper leaf and apply it with a sizing and have beautiful results with no sonic problems.

a coat of clear, solvent based lacquer will prevent the tarnish or patina, stay ayay from the water based stuff for this purpose as it can cause a patina.

That's the one I like. That would look great with most of the modern silver TVs and audio equipment.

I actually built five little satellite boxes entirely out of copper, and I have no issues with funky reflections. As for funky resonances, well, I didn't brace them well enough and gluing copper to copper is a pain. Next time I'll do the veneer thing, I think.

Personally, I think the copper look (with the patina) is sweet. I get complements every time someone new sees the speakers. Good luck with yours!
