I assume you solved your problem? I keep a 2nd hard drive in one of those removable drive sleds in a 5 1/4" bay, and I do have 3 extra drives. So, I keep everything well backed up (cloned) and practice with new software on the 2nd drive before installing it for "real" on the main drive. Drives are cheap so there is little reason not to be completely backed up (cloned) to a bootable 2nd drive.

Redundancy = peace of mind.
