speaker dust covers
Originals are felt and air moves freely through.
Will paper ones effect sound or performance. They are old school speakers. Thanks.

Yes. Vented caps were used to prevent compression under the cap and vent the coil in lieu of vented polepieces.

Felt ones were cut out to refoam. Where can felt ones be found?

I don't understand why people cut out the dustcap to refoam speakers?!
Anyway, Google searches are always your friend!

Aaron,
How else would you ensure that the cone is centered on the polepiece other than by removing the dustcover and inserting the shims? Even with the shims it's easy to start out with a little rub at first.

Easy way to keep originals
When I refoam, if the dust cap is in good condition, I don't cut it all the way off. I use a new razor blade, and cut almost all the way around, leaving a small amount un cut. You can then use that as a hinge, moving the dust cap out of the way to insert the shims. Once the surounds have dried, pull the shims, and reglue the dust cap down. If done carefully, you won't be able to tell without a very close inspection.

In most cases the spider will hold the assembly in alignment. This assumes that the spider isn't excessively worn.

I did the shim thing once. The refoam took an hour per speakers and ruined the original caps. I now refoam without shims and it takes fifteen minutes and no damage.
