You can do *neat* things with Pine... *PIC*

I like to scorch it evenly with a butane torch. Take long strokes with the grain, and don't stay in one place too long. Keep the flame moving or the wood with blacken. Wipe excess ash off with a damp rag when done, and apply finish.
The "3CR" red panels are pine, scorched, and red paint brushed on/wiped off. Finish layer is Polyurethane Satin.
In the "Sir Audinums", the baffles are pine also, scorched, rosewood gel stain, poly.

I am planning to use this in more projects, as I like the dark grain, and the finish-mimicking possibilities are almost endless.

Interesting technique. The first time you tried to do that to the speakers, was your mind set, "It think I will take a risk because this could look nice" or, "Screw it, at least the capacitors blowing up will look cool".

No. I tried it on a sample first, then proceeded to do the baffles prior-assembly. I finished tham after I assembled them. I don't take many risks during assembly/finish.
