Wife Approval

My plan of a surround sound setup and a separate pair of speakers for music was vetoed by my wife. So now I am limited to only one pair of mains. Currently using 3 TriTrixs for my L, R, Center. I ordered the parts for the Encore's and was planning on using them for my music. (Thought the aluminum cones would fair better with Zack Wylde's guitar work!) Can I combine both of these designs into one cabinet, and scoot by on a technicallity with the wife. Was thinking TriTrix on the bottum as a TMM lined up with my seated height and the Encore parts on the top because I am usually on my feet doing things around the house when I listen to music. Separate enclosures of course, but does this plan pose any issues that I am not thinking of and make it a bad idea? Thanks, Jim

No, the negotiations are closed. Any chance I stood at talking her into it was gone when I talked her into the 57" 1080p TV that I so much enjoy. I'm afraid all my hope resides in the two speakers one cabinet idea.

Always a good idea, but bribery is not in the budget this time around. Plus, the potential visual impact of incorporating both the designs into one is starting to spark my artistic side the more I think about it.

I think the Tritrix won't work well with a TMM enclosure. Because the tritrix is a 2 way design, the gap between the tweeter and the bottom woofer would be too large. The frequency response, especially vertically off axis, would be filled with cancellations. Maybe you can ask curt to see if he can redesign it to be a 2.5 way with similar voicing to the 2 way.

Yeah I think you are probably right. Leaving it as a MTM won't make that big of a difference in getting proper height for listening. My sofa is about 16 feet from where the speakers sit. I don't think that 6 inches or so off of ideal height will make or break my listening experience from that distance.

If you're going to be up and walking around anyway, i don't see why the Tritrix would be bad for music. It will be capable of more spl compared to the Encore aswell.

It's not that I think the TriTrix are bad for music. I think they are an amazing speaker, especially for the low cost in the building of them. I am very pleased with the way they sound. The paper woofer cones just don't seem to like my Black Label Society CDs and I thought that the aluminum cones of the RS drivers would do a little better against that kind of relentless metal guitar work. Was definitely not intended to be a slight against the TriTrixs I love them and thank Curt for the time and effort and for so generously giving the fruits of his labor to the rest of us!

So....the TriTrix's are less than satisfying for music? That is what I am getting from this. I would think that an MTM TL would be a good thing for music. Maybe adding a change of EQ to the existing speakers will give you a more favorable curve for satisfying music listening. Also, you might think of tilting them back a bit. This could project them into the room better and give a more favorable dispersion for when you are standing up. Just a guess, here, but if your wife is like most, she is not going to go for a "stacked tower" mess of speaks in her living room....this will be viewed as the same as more speakers side by side in the living room.....obtrusive...and that's what the problem is.

What i mean't was the dayton classic drivers don't have the low distortion characteristics of the RS drivers. I'm guessing they are missing the 'bite' in the guitar that JHaley wants. Some people may favor the sound they have. It was no knock against Curt's design skills, we all know he does a great job.
