Thread: AV Wall plates

  1. #1

    Default AV Wall plates

I am going to mount a HDMI plasma or LCD display above the mantle on my fireplace.

I am framing out the fireplace enclosure with drywall and studs. I want to run my wiring in the wall and terminate in a single or dual gang box. Seems simple although I have never done this before.

    Question:

What kind of wall plate/junction box combination should I get?
I assume I will need an HDMI connector?
Also, can I gang together a duplex receptacle for the power cord in the same box? Or should I separate them? I'll run the power from a nearby duplex outlet.

I have not worked with HDMI before, but a decent quality cable and box would be pretty well shielded against EMI from power wires. But still, as a general rule you don't want to run signal cables parallel to power cables, so keep them separate where possible, but for a short run it might be ok to have them together in a dual box.

    Provided Link: Carlon split box

It is against code (and not really a good idea) to run power cables and low voltage in the same box.

Carlon does manufacture a split box that is enclosed on one side, and an open mud ring on the other. This will look like a double gang box from the finished side of the wall, but in reality, be a single gange box and a single gang mud ring attached together.

As for the HDMI cable, I would recommend using a wall plate with an open hole in it. then you can just run a pre-terminated cable through.

    Hope that helps.

I did the wall plate with the open hole so that I would have one fewer video connection. It doesn't look that great so good thing it is hidden. Maybe I will check out PartsExpress to see if they have any.

    Bill,

Check out Monoprice. They sell an HDMI wall plate that is very nice and under 10 bucks. Their cables are also great values for the money.

    Provided Link: Decora Insert

Here is an open hole plate that will work with a decora cover.

Put this on the open side, a decora AC receptacle on the other side, cover both with a 2-gang decora cover, and viola!

(I just bought a bunch of this stuff from the distributor linked in the image. I am sure PE sells the same, I just dont know the Part #'s.)

    Hope that helps!
