Default OT: Major computer problem "Windows Logon"

My computer reboots ad infinitum. My wife says she used it earlier today with no problems except that Windows Update asked to restart. She clicked "restart later" and continued working. She then put the system into Hibernate (as we usually do) and left. Tonight, the computer started itself and is now in a state of reboot. I've tried "Last Known Good Config" "Safe Mode" - all the tricks. I cannot get Windows XP recovery going because I need a SATA driver which I can't install because I have no floppy drive!! GRRRR!!

I stopped the reboot process, only to receive a "windows logon process system process terminated" BSoD. Everything I've checked says that a failed Update is the problem.

How can I fix this even though I can't actually do a Recovery? I can do DOS if someone has an answer...

    Very many thanks in advance!

If it's a failed update, and what it's doing sounds about right for that, can you go to Microsoft's site and download the update and re-install it? If you can't do it on that computer, can you do this from another computer, burn it to a CD, and then run the executable off of it on the problem machine?

    Default Hmm, that's curious

After work last night, I was hammering out some stuff on the PC and the update thingy from hell really started playing a number on my laptop. It got so bad that I was pretty much forced to save my work right then and abide with it's wishes to have a restart. I was able to get it to come back up when I finally restarted it but it was mighty balky after that. I usually just hibernate the thing but last night I shut it off completely in hopes that I could actually get some work done after work tonight. This really doesn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. I was threatening to throw the 'puter in the food processor after the crap last night so I'm betting tonight will be a real fun experience.

can't you burn the SATA driver onto a CD ROM (or even a USB drive) and proceed from there?

Worst case, I've a spare floppy drive I can send you for the cost of shipping.

Maybe. I am not sure how to point the XP disc to look at a USB drive, though. I have a 3.5" around here, but no way to get the SATA driver on to a floppy.

To Pete: I'd have to be able to login to Windows first, right? I get the impression that a login file is corrupted.

    Hi Aaron,

I think if you boot off of your XP install CD it will give you the option to install drivers to access the hard disk. I believe this was to support SCSI drives, but it might work, I've never tried it...I guess I'm still using obsolete stuff, all of my stuff is just ATA.

Push come to shove, you can probably save your data to a USB memory stick if you boot off one of the Linux live disks. Ubuntu is pretty easy to use, and Knoppix is another good one for data recovery. After that, it's re-install XP time tho. I just went through that on my laptop, which was running slower than molasses in January...fun fun fun.

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, but thanks for letting us know about the issue...I'll make sure Auto update is off on all of my machines for the next week or so.

    Best Regards,

    Steve

OMG! You confused me for Pete. I'll never be the same again! ;- )

You could run the exe file through DOS, couldn't you?

Sorry, saw this comment in your post above -

" I can do DOS if someone has an answer..."

    and I ran with it.

    Pete, er, I mean Jeff.

    HAH. Whoops!

I can't remember whom I've talked to. My brother just told me that DOS isn't available like it was on Win98. So, sorry about that...I'm confused, myself.

This may help. I found these directions online. Hope that this works for the latest patches. It is probably due to these latest updates. KB935840, KB929123, KB935839, KB933566

Please follow the procedure suggested by microsoft to solve BSOD problem from the latest windows update.

    1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk in your floppy disk drive or insert the Windows XP CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive, and then restart
    your computer.

Note When you receive the following message,

press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD:

Press any key to boot from CD

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or the DVD drive.
For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD drive or the DVD drive, see the documentation that came with your
computer or contact the computer manufacturer.

    2. When you receive the Welcome to Setup message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Note Multiple options will appear on the screen.

    3. Select the Windows XP installation in question.
Note You must select a number before you press ENTER, or the computer will restart. Typically, only the 1: C:\Windows selection is available.

    4. If you are prompted to type an administrator password, do so. If you do not know the administrator password, press ENTER. (Typically, the password is blank.)

Note You will not be able to continue if you do not have the administrator password.

    5. At the command prompt, type cd $ntuninstallKB.........HERE THE
NUMBER OF THE PATCH.....$\spuninst, and then press ENTER.

Note After you complete this step, you cannot stop the removal process.

    6. At the command prompt, type batch spuninst.txt, and then press ENTER.

    7. After the Patch is removed, type exit, and then press ENTER Uninstall the Next

    please uninstall

Provided Link: SATA/IDE to USB adapter

Hopefully, you'll be able to restore your Windows OS.... BUT!..If you get to a point where you feel like you'll have to reinstall XP, this is a pretty handy tool to have. You can pull your hard drive out, hook this adapter to it and plug it into a USB port on another computer and read it like an external drive. You can at least save off critical files/folders before you do the reinstall. I've used it a couple of times now and have managed to save a lot of critical stuff. Well worth the $20.

If the confuser has an IDE controller, go down to boxmart and buy the cheapest IDE drive they've got, and set that up to boot... Then go through the windoze install on the SATA drive, and fix it...

Oh, that is SWEET! Yeah, I found that I have to install a floppy drive (which there are a bazillion at work) and load my SATA drivers into that. I will be buying this little guy, too because I can surely use it anyway!

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks, Dave! I will try these things once I get a floppy drive installed into the system.

NEWSFLASH: My wife just gave me the A-OK to buy a whole new computer. YEAH! I needed an upgrade, anyway.

My wife's office partner accidently hosed up her laptop while trying to free up some hard drive space and couldn't get her machine to boot up. She had Xmas pics, kid pics, and pics of her brother who had recently passed away that she was sure she had lost. I was able to pluck those off of the drive along with all of her work files and save them onto my computer and then install XP for her...I was a regular hero...all for 20 bucks...

I've been going through an upgrade cycle, but to be honest with you, I don't know exactly what I have right now. I know that I have at least 6 hard drives, but who know what sizes and condition, and there is at least one XP1800-type motherboard with CPU and probably 512K of DDR333 or better memory. I'm short on cases, which is probably OK since they are expensive to ship. I won't know what's available until the dust settles, but if you are interested I'll put you after "Nick" but ahead of the "Dumpster" (not shown on the figure below).

The diagram isn't correct. The "new case" that I was going to get for Nick is probably going to be the one that Babs had in her classroom which has 4 LM3886 boards in it, with a decent power supply and an small 4-channel preamp circuit. Nick rates because he cuts our grass at the Oakland house. If you came out and cut out grass periodically, I'd give you some better stuff

    "Last Known Good Config"

This is using a setting-list of a prior date, correct? "System Recovery" can restart the PC from the point before the update, then istall it as planned. I've had to do this once, around the time of the dreaded SP2 issues.
