Me loves it, too! My fav is "Tuesday Afternoon". I had a vinyl copy that was in great shape, but I recently got the remastered CD. WOW! I also picked up "A Question Of Balance" and "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor". I have some terrific memories of college, this hot girl, her Moody Blues records, and...well, you know the rest!

    Here's one for you ;-)

Its a scan of the cover of a double LP of songs before they put out their first album, "Days of Future Past"

    That was always my favorite.

But I have to say, I liked ALL their early albums. There's no question, they were really the first "progressive" rock band.

    Default NP?

Ok, I give up. What does NP stand for? I understand it means "good music to check out" but what's it an abbreviation of?

    Default How about the prequel?

I have them all on vinyl, well, up to Seventh Sojourn, including the prequel to DOFP, 'Go Now'. -An entirely different sound, from a band seemingly headed in an entirely different direction.

Default An interesting time for pop music

Well, I dunno. The Beatles arguably were the first to incorporate "classical" orchestral effects, along with pure experimental weirdness, into pop music. Sgt. Pepper was the huge influential watershed, but even Rubber Soul and Revolver were going well beyond what anyone else was doing at the time.

The Nice (w/ Keith Emerson), the Electric Prunes, Procol Harum and a number of other late '60s bands were also experimenting with classical-influenced structures and textures. Then of course came King Crimson, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull and a host of other mostly Brit bands. In San Fran, bands like the Airplane, the Dead, and Quicksilver were incorporating extended virtuosic improvisation into folk-based rock.

The amazing thing is that such bands actually got radio play and sold lots of records, without dumbing down and pandering to the lowest common denominator of popular taste. There were simply more open-minded music fans willing to be challenged by technically advanced material in those days--I dunno, maybe it was the superior drugs.

Nowadays a number of "prog" bands still carry the torch, but they're on small indie labels, get no airplay, and appeal to a very limited cultish audience.
