Thread: Vinyl music??

  1. #1

    Default Vinyl music??

Where do you get vinyl records? i've recently found an affordable turntable by "Pro-ject" in a forbes magazine for $300. but the machine would be useless without actual records, and i dont know where to get them. and i've Got to have my music!

can someone please recommend me a trusty and well known site that sells LP(is that the correct term?) records?

You need to be in a major metropolitan center, where you will still find new/used record stores.

The bonus is that, if shopping with ladies and you need some time to yourself, you just say: "I'm going to the used record store. Wanna come?" and you will find yourself instantly alone.

There're tons of websites selling new records. They tend to be too expensive though. Also, one can still find records in the trash or at yardsales. But not as aften as ten years ago.

Goodwill has a ton of them too. At least some Goodwill's do. If you have one near you its definately worth a look-se. You can also find CDs with one hit wonders on them... I got Hammer's Please don't Hurt em the other day for 3 bucks... cant touch that!

Goodwill also has speakers, some nice and just needing some repair. I picked up my Genesis I's there for like 10-15 bucks, and just had to foam them (then I upgraded the caps to MP and that harsh midrange that some complained about seemed to melt away, I loved them before, now theyre sooooo smooth). And my Infinity RS 2000.2's as well, 7.95 + foam!

But I digres, Goodwill is an awesome store, especially for college students like myself. They sell all sorts of things, and they usually sell vinyl. There are 4 of them within 25 minutes of my house, two of them I know have a selection of vinyl that is probably two shelves to 4 shelves large, and the other two I haven't looked. The good deal is they chage 3 bucks for CD's, I think Vinyl is even cheaper. Definitely worth your while.

Default ...and don't forget a good brush & vynil fluid

Like Disc doctor brushes (~$22) and Record Research lab fluid (~$24) to clean deep and a good carbon brush to wipe dust (~$18)

I've seen some bands' web-sites that offer vinyl versions of their albums. Around here in the NW there's a chain of vinyl stores called Golden Oldies. I've found copies of rare albums that I used to own (stupidly sold them when I was between jobs) at this place. Most of them are in great shape and some in the original shrink-wrap. Second-hand stores are another place to look, but it's hit-or-miss as far as "playable condition". Get a good record cleaner, like a Discwasher, or something similar. Here's some links that can help you get the most out of your vinyl:

    <A HREF="http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/index.htm">http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/index.htm</A>

While they don't have the actual records (but they might have some info on where to go), there are some great accessories for keeping your records in good shape and some stuff for your turntable.

There was a site that got into the business of selling high quality records (180g, virgin vinyl digital mastering...al that stuff) early on, but I forget. You pay $20 and up for those records though.

I would go for the used stuff more. There have to be tons of record stores in NY. There used to be a great reggae/soul/funk record store on the lower East side actually, off 43rd St, about 8 blocks east of Times Sq. But maybe Ghouliani got rid of it...Certainly Greenwich Vil. has to have some Just walk around for a while...I'm missing NY now....
