outdoor speaker project
I would like to build some out door speakers, but I do not know what kind of drivers to use in a project like this. I want to use eight inch wolfers and a nice tweeters. Any sugestions?

Re: outdoor speaker project
Well, the basics would be cones of alum., poly or some other material unaffected by the elements. Sealed design to keep out the elements/critters, And a box material or finish that can withstand the elements. Other than that it's your choice.

Two very nice components make up this two way.
You couldn't go wrong.

The Moser MT uses 7" woofers *PIC*

He was looking for an 8" woofer project.

Starting in 2002, I worked as a sound engineer for 3 consecutive summers on an outdoor show, 45 shows per season. We had a Servodrive Bass Tech 7 subwoofer underneath the audience seating area for LFE. As the second season went by, I kept experiencing decreasing low-end performance from the system to a point it became ridiculously weak. Some time before the third season began, we decided to open the Servodrive to inspect the drivers, a pair of 15 inches paper cones in a faily elaborate folded horn.
What we found was a full blown rodent nest made from any stuff the bastard could find elsewhere on the site. The drivers had a punctured outer suspension from where the mice got into the rear chamber, which was packed full of wool-like material.
No wonder the big box wasn't producing the sound it should have!
The drivers were replaced and a heavy duty grill was installed on the enclosure's mouth opening!
BTW, if you don't know about those subs, they are simply amazing and even more amazing is their low popularity. 4 units will produce 142 dB at rated power input, at 28 Hz!

Ha! I've thought about this. It's not a bad idea at all. The design has full bafflestep which is perfect outdoors, and the drivers, well, they're not really outdoor drivers. But, you could make a faceplate cover when not in use and, if they deteriorate, well, it's not like you left a pair of revelators out in the rain!!!

Something cheap I did in my back yard was to use the 5 x 7 buyouts sealed in a .6 cu ft 12 inch x16 inch pvc schedule 40 pipe. I driver faces down and the last 7 inches of the tube are open in the front with the cut out piece of the pipe at a 45 degree angle reflecting the sound forward. I use a sub on the patio also made out of the 12 inch pipe with a 10 dvc facing down. They survived 70 mph winds and 2 inches of rain last week. Works for me and sounds good. I had $40 in speakers and parts, the pipe was free, given to me at a local constructon site and I spray painted them dark green to match the plants. The wife loves them so I guess they are ok. Marc
