Default Have car sound guys gone crazy?

I must be out of touch. I was searching for a Behringer product today by model number (SRC2496) and since someone mentioned this item in their review of a DCX2496, the search engine took me to that page. Well, I have a DCX2496 so I thought I'd read the reviews. There a guy who's using this in his car!

Sorry if this seems normal to the rest of you, but I just got a car CD player a year ago. I'm at least 6 months away from going to a fully active, multi-amp, computer controlled system in my car. No offense, but this just seems nuts to me.

Default Aaron has had one in his car....

...for a while now, and was selling a car-kit for retrofitting it to a car's electrical system. He has the whole PWM/Litz-coil setup for an onboard PSU swap.

...to adapt a DCX2496 than to use a dedicated car audio product. Time alignment and parametric EQ are extremely important for decent car audio. I say "decent" because, in a car, that's about as good as one can accomplish.

. . . you spend a lot of time driving. Some people have hellish 2 or 3 hour commutes to and from work, or drive for a living, and really good sound could make it more tolerable. It's notoriously difficult to get anything like a smooth FR inside a vehicle--I can see where some DSP would help tremendously.

Until a couple of years ago I drove 1000+ miles a week. The joy of listening to music died the day my company issued cell phones to everyone. It didn't make us more productive, but it let us be part of countless stupid conversations we would have otherwise missed out on.

I simply don't answer the d@mned thing while I'm driving. Unless it's my wife. And I have my headset on. Discussing business while driving is a real good way to lose focus on the road.

"I'm in traffic. Gotta go." Try it. You'll like it.

    Bill,

I agree that it's a lot safer to answer your wife's call on a cell phone while driving. I mean, they say we never listen to them anyway:^)

Ouch! My wife was looking over my shoulder :^(
I think I'm going to need an icepack.

I use a headset, but the rest of your idea was shot down by boss's ADD and OCD. I'm serious. Imagine 30-40 calls a day. I eventually left, and now I rarely turn my phone. Last month I used 11 minutes of time.

Default So this old man . . .

. . . has to drive 60 miles to the city, to straighten out a problem with his VA benefits. He hates traffic and doesn't like to go on the freeway, but there's no choice.

So he's driving along, and his wife calls him on his cell phone to say, "Be careful out there, dear. I just heard on the radio that there's a car going the wrong way on the freeway."

"Oh honey," he says, "It's not just one car. It's HUNDREDS of them!"

It depends. There are HU that include such DSP built-in. My Alpine HU have crossovers, P-EQ and Time Alignment. Using such a HU will have those benefits : No need for a DCX, for a PSU mod, for a remote power turn-on/off and for RCA/XLR adaptors. You don't lose real estate and don't have to affix a rackmount unit somewhere. You can use the internal power amps in the HU (I use mine to drive tweeters (25 watts per channel over 4 kHz in a car is plenty loud!)

According to my sales, about 40 are using them in their cars (some with multiple units). Time alignment is key. Once you try it, you'll never go back to "average" car audio.

So, what if you don't like the Alpine headunits? Looks like we're stuck!
