Having Knee surgery, Need a Project!!!
Well, the old knee finally gave out for the last time so it's off to surgery. I've been looking to do another diy speaker and this is going to be the perfect excuse. I'm looking to make a pair of speakers for music only and full range. I really like unusual designs (omni's, open baffles) I have plenty of experience in wookworking so the complexity of construction does not scare me. BUT, I do not have the same experience in Crossovers. I've built the BR-1s and zaphs B3s home theatre. I'm looking to spend 300 or less on driver and crossover parts. I really liked the sound rounds, but the drivers are no longer available. I also really like the aethers, but again the availablitity is none. Any ideas? Point me towards a design :-)

Re: Having Knee surgery, Need a Project!!!
I'm looking for something with a very open and large soundstage and will ONLY be used for music and i don't want to have to use a sub.

Okay, I'll take a shot *PIC*

Or maybe these? *PIC*

Those HAVE to sound good! I would build the Shtick if I wanted an easy, and great result. I have heard or used every driver in those, and they all sound good.

The Aether v3 would work for you. The W5-704D is still available, and so are the tweeters and woofers.
I suppose one of the Statement-Series might fit your bill.
Do you want/are you open to bookshelves?

I purposely did the Version 3 of the Aethers because people wanted to build them using available drivers. I'm actually very glad I did. I learned a lot as a crossover designer, and this version isn't lacking anything from the original. They sit now, in my living room, as my main listening speakers. And in no way am I saying I'm a speaker wizard or anything, but I don't really know if I can top this design anytime soon.

GREAT! I'd love to see what a patient, creative woodworker can do with the cabinets. JasonB's were beautiful.
(I hope he doesn't mind me posting his page here)

Well, this is just about as simple a 3-way crossover as you can get. If you need help converting the schematic into a physical layout, there's plenty of folks around here who can help with that.

Gotcha covered there, too.
I don't know what else to tell you. It seems like a good fit for you. It's not like I'm trying to SELL you on this project; I make zero dollars if you build it ;-) I just love playing music, and listening to music. So I built the sort of speakers that I found enjoyable and realistic to listen to as wide a variety of music as possible.

Shticks are good for bad knees... *PIC*

Provided Link: Shticks
Both of my knees are shot. I built these mostly out of an old office chair. These definitely meet your criteria.

And Lou's implementation is darn good too

Re: Having Knee surgery, Need a Project!!!
I can't find the tweeters anywhere. madisound seems to be out of stock. Are they sold anywhere else? In the location i will be putting these speakers they will be floor standing... and i'm not a huge fan of bookshelf speakers on stands.

If you're looking for the Fountek Neo CD3 it can be found here...

Its about $8. cheaper than at Madisound, but if future repair is a concern, check out this thread...

IIRC the Neo CD3 used to have a plastic flange; and SpeakerCity doesn't mention anything about flange material.
MADs' Neo CD3 comes w/ metal flange.

It's a pretty common tweeter. I know Meniscus also sells them. They're very nice guys there (PE is nice, too ;-) I believe Zalytron also sells them.
I tried swapping out a 27TBFC/G for the 27TDFC in the Aethers, and it's no problem. In fact, I'm sure the 27TDFC/TV would also work just fine. I've built designs that were intended for each of those tweeters, and swapped them around, and while they sounded a slight bit different, it was nothing my ears didn't get used to after a few minutes. AFAIK, those three tweeters were intended to be drop-in replacements for one another by Seas. The silk dome model has a rising top end, which people either seem to like or dislike (read: a slight "airy" quality), where the metal dome is just plain accurate. But again, they're all excellent, and don't require any changes to the crossover.

Gotcha covered there, too.

Re: But Lou, with your mad skillz...
Seriously, after as many speakers as you've designed and built, you ought to be able to put them together lying down.

Tried it but...
too much dust in my ears. Kept falling asleep on the mattress topper...

Re: Wolf's right
Thanks for your time! I've decided to go for the aethers. I'm darn pretty excited. It won't be for a few weeks until after surgery. But as soon as I start I'll be posting pics! I've got a few different ideas of the construction! We'll see what it comes out looking like.

You will not regret the decision.
