Default W-T/M-W With Rotating T/M Plate

I was reading this thread... http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...=206004&page=1

Zaph added some info to his blog (currently near the bottom of the page)... http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...=206004&page=1

This has me thinking that making a matched F/C/R set with the center "baffle" or plate which rotates to re-orient the T/M for R, C, or L duty would be a good idea. This simply makes each piece more versatile. Of course, the T/M chamber must be isolated from the woofers.

    Thoughts?

EDIT: Would this affect the baffle step components when in horizontal configuration?

You could also add a powered sub to each speaker, to make them "more versatile". But you wouldn't do that because it's a bad idea. Oh wait! Our ideas have that in common!
Building it big and playing it loud! Because we all know size really does matter, and a little over compensation never hurt anyone.

Adding powered subs, at least for L and R, is a given. FWIW, I like your ideas, Todd!!

I didn't mean all your ideas were bad. Actually most are quite good, but this one seems full of problems. I've got a Wt/mW center and I was looking at it trying to figure out how to do what you proposed. Hmmmmmm...... I guess you could make a rotating chamber out of PVC and insert it into a hole in your cabinet. You could avoid sealing issues by making the woofer sections seperate chambers. Basically a three chamber box with the center section using the rotating chamber.

It could be done but just building a seperate speaker seems like it would be easier.

Yes, this is basically the idea. Another option is to use a square or round baffle for the T/M and mount it separately from the woofer baffles. This allows for reorientation as desired but that's more trouble than simply spinning it on its axis. Again, this is just to make them more versatile... sort of goes along with modular design. A step further would be to build three separate boxes for (2ea) woofers and the T/M. One could use pass-through bolts to hold the disparate pieces together. Think of the mix/match possibilities.

Again though, I suspect the affect on baffle step renders this Lego-style concept impractical. One could build with multiple BS options, I suppose, but I dunno??

Realistically, I think that if someone builds a WTMW design, they're going to make a tower out of it, as opposed to it sitting on some sort of 15" tall stand. If they do that, they'll end up wanting to build a different cabinet for the center channel anyway...

I'm just talking "versatility" here... not necessarily "practicality". The idea is to make each speaker perfectly suitable for any configuration. Think of it as taking things a step further than sub/sats.
