    Default Another stupid crossover question??

Hi Folks.....I've been given the job of "re-stuffing" an existing pair of speaker cabinets for a friend. They're a pair of 10" two-ways (yeah...I know.) They're an old pair of Yamaha NS-5's...one tweeter and one woofer are junk, but the cabinets are well-made and like new. They're flush-mounted into bookcases, which is why the owner wants to keep the same enclosures.

The cabinets are sealed, with just over 1 cubic foot of volume. I'm thinking of using the Dayton DC250 woofers and DC28F tweeters. I don't really want to use "store-bought" crossovers, but I don't want to design my own, either.

The drivers I mentioned are perfect physical drop-ins, which is good because I don't want to modify the cabinets. Also....I do have a pair of the DC28F's.

The crossovers for the "Noah's 8s" project look like they might work, except for the tweeter L-pad. The DC200 and DC250 have very similar numbers, and possibly even the same motor structure. The biggest difference seems to be the efficiency. I'm not sure what to do about baffle step either, since the speakers are pretty much flush with the spines of the books in the bookcases.

    ...........sorry for the long-winded post.......

    Any advice?

Do the name Advent ring a bell? The best selling speakers of all time were 10" two-ways, and if you could find a pair with intact surrounds they'd still hold their own today. OTOH, the Advent woofer was really an eight in a ten frame. You'd probably do better to reload with eights or even long excursion six point fives to get decent dispersion up to where a tweeter can take over. As for the baffle step, in this situation there is none. One of the design features of true bookshelf speakers was that surrounding them with books created the equivalent of flush mounting, eliminating the baffle step and Allison Effect.

Bill -- Thanks for the reply. I understand the limitations of using the 10" woofer as a two-way regarding dispersion and so forth.
Years ago I sold the old Advents, and I also remember the AR-14 (another 10-inch plus dome design.)

The idea for this project was simply to re-load the existing speakers with drivers and crossovers......otherwise it would make more sense to build complete new ones with a more logical driver layout. The cabinets don't lend themselves to modifications without looking "cobbled."

So my question remains.....would the Noah's 8s crossovers work...possibly with changes to the L-pad circuit??

I looked at all the info. I think it works without a mod. i would use the shielded tweeter if you have it. the unshielded would be okay. what size amp? and does it get blasted really loud? I think you don't the padding to be changed. all this is based on gut feeling and having done similar swaps on different speakers.
