Default 20 hours of listening later: Tritrix Towers are just awesome

So I've been listening to my Tritrix's for about an hour a day for the past few weeks, and I'm still constantly astonished by just how good these sound...

Given I haven't heard many high-end speakers (maybe that's a good thing?), but I will say that I've owned quite a few store bought speakers over the years, the most expensive pushing $600 bucks for the pair, and these just absolutely spank all of them.

I listen to a lot of electronic music, much of which is chock full of very subtle and intricate sound... CD's I've heard a hundred times on other systems I feel like I'm hearing for the first time... the amount of information I'm hearing is just incredible... seems like I'm finally hearing what the artists really intended.

I just stare at them and can't believe that I'm listening to sub-$20 drivers.

Huge thanks and yet another round of applause for Curt Campbell for designing such great speakers at such a low price, and for all the help he gave me in evaluating the various twists I put on his design.

Anyone considering great speakers on a budget, I can't recommend these enough... again, I'm no expert, but safe to say that you'd be hard pressed to do much better at this price.

I've heard just about all of the so-called high-end offerings and most of what's in between AFA as price-range goes. I did it 5-6 days a week for 20 years and still peruse "audio row" in Seattle at least once a year to hear new and some still-around designs from the commercial market. I haven't found anything yet that would make me want give up my present and future DIY speakers. Sure, some of the B&W and Focal stuff is nice and I can listen to more than a couple songs without getting ear fatigue, but not for the price. There are still some larger metro areas that have the more "mom 'n pop" type of audio store, so there are opportunities to hear some of the expensive speakers. You won't find anything at any price at the big-box stores or retailers like Fry's and Tweeters worth spending your $$ on (only referring to speakers). But I would forgo that and try to attend one of the DIY events...that's where you'll hear designs that are worthy of your time & money investment. I have a few projects around here that use the "classic" drivers like the 8", 6.5", 5.25" and silkie tweeter. Everyone is astonished at the SQ that eminates from those designs, even before I tell them how much it costs to build 'em. I'm still impressed, also. Wait 'till you add a sub to fill in the lower octave(s)...you'll be going back through your CD collection again!

I actually have heard them with a sub, and it was great... but the sub was p*ssing off the wife so now I'm just running them full range without a sub... very glad I went vented with them for that reason.

Man, I have empathy for you...it pi$$es her off? Wow, I've never heard that before. Usually it's "that thing is too big and/or ugly" or "it has to look like a piece of nice furniture". Unless she's in another room when it's on and all she can hear are the low frequencies.

That's exactly the problem... I'm in the basement listening while she's directly above me... the bass goes right thru the floor.

"P*sses her off" is perhaps too strong of a term... more like "that's kind of annoying, could you please turn down the bass" is more accurate... and I don't blame her, I went upstairs while the sub was playing and I agree it was annoying.

Basement finished? If not, R-19 fibreglass in the floor joists and a layer of drywall will help significantly...

I built a set of these shortly after they were posted in the showcase and they truly are a nice sounding set of speakers!

I really like the look of your blue cabinets! What kind of paint did you use and the method of application used. Are they gloss coat and how many coats of sealer was used before painting?

2 coats of a 50/50 wood glue and water solution, sanding, then 3 coats of primer, more sanding, then 3 coats of vinyl paint, then 3 coats of clear coat. all paint and primer done from a paint gun.

Thank You for the reply on the finishing porcess! Did you have any elbow and fingers left after all the sanding?

Hope you enjoy them for years to come! They really are a classy looking set of speakers!

Suspend the drywall using screws and soft rubber bushings to prevent a solid connection to the joists then carpet the floor with a soft pad between the carpet and the floor. If you live in earthquake country the sub sound sets off psychological alarms and make the unsuspecting really nervous.
