Low volume when playing DVD's

When I play DVD's I have to turn the volume up in my receiver too much and
some passages are very quit barely audible. I have my receiver and DVD player in stereo mode.

Same thing for me. Fairly certain this is just how it is; but some movies are worse than others.

Im guessing you have a normal stereo (two speaker) setup; the problem goes a way a little with a addition of a center or a full 5.1. But, in my opinion many studios just put voice volume too low relative to everything else. This is why with some receivers, the ps3, etc... there are options to make voices more audible (I cant tell a difference though).

Have you tried going into the movie's set-up menu and choosing the stereo track? I really don't know if that's possible, but I see the stereo AC3 sound tracks on most of my movies when I rip them to my hard drive.

-- My DVD player has a dynamic range limiting function. Turn this on at night to compress the audio
--My receiver has a night mode. THis also helps to smooth out the transients.

Either one of these options could help the quiet sections of the dialog to more closely match the louder parts of the soundtrack.
