Default Original Titanic in a vented box...

I have an original titanic 1200 (295-400) and it is currently in a 2.3 cu ft sealed box with a 500 w plate amp from PE 300-806. it sounds ok and wanted to go to a vented box for this... the Vas on the 1200 is 9.89 cu. ft. and the Qt = .41 with an Fs =16 Hz so I did a quick calculation and came up with a volume of about 12 cu. ft. Way too big for practical use.. and when i came up with this size didnt even bother to calc a port size...

    so the question is..
did I screw up the box size calc. dont think I did due the the very large Vas.. todays titanics Vas is only 3 and the RS series subs about the same... and if I am right was this speaker ever designed to go into a vented box in the first place???

I think if a vented box is not practical for the 1200 and risk bodily harm from my wife for buying another speaker I may consider the new titanic or the RS sub.. staying with 12inches...

    Any thoughts??

You're dead-on. If you built that monster, you would find that your power handling was so low that you would end up having LESS overall output than if you had left it sealed. With that huge Vas, it's just not a woofer well-suited to vented box use (nor was it ever designed to be).

The 1200 had the lowest F3 I think I've ever seen of a sealed-box 12". And that it does REALLY well.

Thanks... so my expectation that todays titanic or the RS series subs in a vented box would out perform my old school titanic in a sealed box may be incorrect???

You can go vented, and you don't need to do 12 cubic feet. But you would need around 5 cubic feet and a low system resonance. 24" of 4" diameter vent would be about right, and you'd get quite a bit more SPL from the system in the 20Hz region than from the sealed box variant.

Of course, below tuning you completely unload the woofer.

the rss390hf-4 in a sealed box of 4.5 cu ft will out perform your older titanic. you can use the amp that you are using with your old titanic. comes out to a 23 inch cube.
