Thread: Crossover help

    Default Crossover help

    Hello, newb here
I am building a pair of towers using 2 DA175-8, 2 DA135-8 and 1 RS28A-4. Basically they will be copies of Vince's VHT's, but made from 3/4 MDF and the Dayton tweet in place of the vifa. Was wondering if that X-over is right, or can be tweeked a little to work. This is for H/T use. Or if someone can direct me to a hole new X-over design, that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Alan

Using a different tweeter will require a new XO design...tweaking by ear can be very time-consuming and expensive if you don't have some different cap/coil/resistor values on hand and without any reference, you could end up chasing your tail, even if you started with the original diagram for the tweeter circuit. I think that Vifa PL tweeter is NLA...not sure, though. You could contact Madisound, Meniscus, Solen or Speaker City to see if they have a pair of those Vifas. Zalytron is another resource.

This should get you pretty close. We're only changing the high pass for your RS tweeter.

    1st cap from 5uF to 12uF.
Shunt coil from 0.50mH to 0.40mH.
2nd cap from 12uF to 60uF (npe here probably),
    . . . then an L-pad using a 2 ohm series and 5 ohm parallel resistors.

BTW, the mids should probably get connected reverse polarity.

Unfortunately all my data for that design bit the dust long ago in a hard drive crash. There was a version using the Vifa D25AG tweeter that no longer survives as well.

In spite of that, I may be able to model something useful for you. Drop me an email if you are interested.

Edit: Didn't see your post until after I'd posted Chris. Your suggestions sound well thought out, and I suspect they will perform well in this application.
