WHO needs MDF...
Appearantly, there has been a huge MDF outbreak recently. Its spreading fast. Its all over the place.. in my car, in my garage, in my back yard, all over my house. Now its starting its own threads. This could be bad.

Re: WHO needs MDF...
Please beware of MDF outgassing of formaldehyde. Excessive exposure is not a good thing.

Re: WHO needs MDF...
MDF outbreaks are seasonal, with the most rampant of them occuring immediately after long, bitterly cold, winters.

I fit a great bit of raw materials in my little Nissan ALtima. Tis really a pain since I don't have a hatch. ALl materials must be cut down to 40"x48".

If dynamite was dangerous, do you think they'd sell it to an idiot like me?

I have loaded 4'x8'x.75" sheets on top of my van and strapped it down with roap. This worked most of the time. Once the sheet came loose! I have been a little ancy since...

Re: WHO needs MDF...
It sux that you can't find good many-layer baltic birch easily at retail stores It's so much more pleasant to work with than MDF.
I've got a little Scion Xd - it might be small, but I can fit a water heater IN THE BOX in the back - sheet goods though, have to be cut in half, or thirds etc...

Re: WHO needs MDF...

Is there a Lowes near you? The Lowes here stocks 1/4" and 3/4" birch in 2x2, 2x4, and 4x8 sheets. You're right, it is beautiful. I have not yet begun my first pair of speakers; I'm still setting up my shop, but I have a few sheets of both birch and oak waiting for me when I'm ready.

Re: WHO needs MDF...
I pulled out my rain-gutter attaching roof racks I move the canoe/kayaks around with.
I love old cars that still have those rain-gutters. My old BMW doesn't mind at all....really!
...rain... has a fidelity of its own.

How many layers does it have? My guess is that it is not Baltic birch, which has 13 or more layers in 3/4" and is almost always in metric sizes, roughly 5'x5'. -- Doug

Re: WHO needs MDF...
So it sounds like most of you cut your wood at home.. I have mine cut at the store. Sometimes its not very accurate, but its good enough, and straighter than what I would get with a handheld saw, and less mess to clean up . Then of course there is the occasional attitude problem from the employee that is ****** about actually having to do work, which results in slightly less accurate cuts.

Last time I bought 6 4x8 sheets, it was more cost effective to rent HD's truck and do the round-trip to the house than it was to cut and/or take multiple trips...
