InDIYana: Big Thank You to Hosts
I just wanted to start a thread to offer a heartfelt THANKS to Ben & Brain for Hosting a "World Class" Event. They realy set the bar high!
The amount and quality of vendor door prizes was "over-the-top".
The Speakers shown were worth paying to see & hear.
Also Mark & Joel set a new standard in vendor participation.
Words fail me in offering enought praise to what Ben & Brain setup.
I will try and post my thoughts on the many speakers shown in another thread, later after I get my thoughts together. Also I need to wait until my head reduces in size, just having my speakers listed in with Dan's, Jeff's, Wolf's, Pauls's, etc is making my head swim and inlarge!
Also I will post more on my FCT3.8's (a.k.a. "Flames").
But for now I want to close with a BIG "THANK YOU" to Ben & Brain.

Ed...
I wasn't able to make the event, but from photos, I'm intrigued by the paint on your speakers.
Could you share some details on how it was done?

Bill, I wish I could give full details on how this paint finish was done. But the art desgin was done by my Son (Ed Froste III) and was executed by James Brown of B&B Publishing Inc. WWW.bbpublishing.net . This was James's 1st speaker finishing job and he put alot of effort into it. He said he would love to do more.
My understanding of what he did was to "air brush" the desgin onto my base coat of paint and then cover it with many coats of auto "mirror" coat(??) then polish it to a mirror finish.
From what I've seen of James's work, if you can dream it up, He can paint it. Also James told me he was one of three in the US who can do what he does.

Re: InDIYana: Big Thank You to Hosts
I've often wondered why more creative finishes and paint jobs aren't employed. While a semi-nude woman would rank fairly low on the WAF, there are all sorts of designs and graphics that could be used. My sister-in-law does faux finishes and frescos in room-sized projects, and I've sometimes thought of hiring her for something unusual.
I've also wondered about alternative materials like a tooled-leather inlay on the sides or on the baffle of some loudspeakers.
While I have these daydreams about novel new finishes and materials, I still return to deciding between glossy or matte finishes. I must be a boring person.

Indeed. I've been kicking around this idea for some piano-black with yellow pinstripes for years.
Not to think like an opportunistic bastard, but I bet there are garages full of highly skilled automotive painters that would cut a great deal for a little extra business right now.

My guess is the good ones are busy. Seems the small guys that are good at what they do are not feeling the crunch.Yet anyway.

VERY well said, Ed! Though I'm exhausted from all the driving (about 1100 miles), I'm so glad I went! It was a fantastic event and I'm very grateful for all who played a part in making it happen, especially Ben and Brian.
So, many, many thanks!

Wouldn't it be Pinky & Brain??
Sound's like I may have to try and make it next year. I like the part about folks not being frightened (running backwards?) by elevated SPLs .
cheers,
AJ

Perhaps next year we can run a DB drag? Will you bring your monstrosities?

Re: InDIYana: Big Thank You to Hosts
I just wanted to chime in on this too...
Ben and Brian did a real bang-up job on the event. It was good to get back together with some folks that I met in Iowa & Lexington and to see some new faces. It was a nice turnout and the event had very laid back atmosphere. I really enjoyed the format of the meet where everyone was "just listening" to the different designs. All the designs that I heard were very good BTW. To me, the designs that made the biggest impression on me were:
Dan Neubecker's Basslines (they sounded great as before)
Jim Salk's HT-2's (nicely balanced and I really liked the LCY tweeters)
Paul Kittenger's Marcato's (one smooth sounding design - again)
I also got to give a big shout out to Frosty & son for the Tang Band's. They were by far the most unique cabinet finishes I've seen to date. Those speakers also had some serious output and produced good bass with just 6-1/2" bass drivers and passive radiators.
The seminar segment with Jeff Bagby was a nice break and it was also informative.
As for the door prizes, never have I seen so much stuff given away than as I have at this one. HUGE KUDOS TO BEN, BRIAN & ALL THE SPONSORS for pulling that off. I will be sure to fire off a thank you e-mail the sponsors this week for the prizes I won.
My broken finger is healing up ok so I've got to get back to work on my design. I hope to have it ready in time for the Iowa event.
Again, my hat's off to you guys and thanks for hosting! I'll see you in Iowa (Lord willing).
PS:
Hey Wolf,
I didn't have a chance to hear your Vijohn's so I'm looking forward to hearing them in Grinnell. Hope you bring 'em.
Peace,
Robert (errrrr....... BRIAN)

Re: InDIYana: Big Thank You to Hosts
One thing I've consistently found is that elevated SPLs don't sound bad, per se. It's the distortion that frequently accompanies it when amps don't have the head room and speakers aren't of this quality. I recall listening to a pair of AR LSTs 30+ years ago driven by a high-end 200W/ch amp that made conversation impossible in the smallish demo room, but were not loud.
By way of comparison, Froste's SCTs didn't sound loud at 100dB (or more?) because both source and amp were up to the speaker's capabilities. Back at my in-law's Sunday night, their 13" TV was down right annoying at a very much lower SPL, and they weren't even playing Willie.
And Paul, I beat your mileage (1150) due to my Wooster detour; your family lives closer to Auburn than my wife's. Let em know if you want help setting up a Finger Lakes DIY.
Again, thanks to Ben and Brian for a very worthwhile event, my first. It's going to be hard to beat...

Re: InDIYana: Big Thank You to Hosts
I'm with Frank on this one - great job Ben and Brian, and this event made a huge impression on me! If I'm within 300 miles of any DIY event, you can pretty much be sure I'll be there!
Also, I had a great time meeting everyone in Indiana- I had a great time at lunch at Ryans with the crew of ~30, as well as dinner with a smaller group at Applebees - great to get to know some of you guys more! Once again, fantastic event, and even though I heard those 6 tracks about 20+ times each, I still listened to them a couple times more in my car on the way back
Thanks Ben and Brian!!

Re: InDIYana: Big Thank You to Hosts
Man... every time, I keep thinking, "really should have gone this year"...
One of these days...
And, since I've heard a lot of mention, and a hint or two, but still haven't seen the tunelist... how about it? What was shaking the air over there?
-
Re: InDIYana: Big Thank You to Hosts
I'll second that; I haven't seen the tune list even though I have the CD...
Gee, maybe I should look for metadata on the cd!
