Default Serious problem with subwoofer amp

I recently purchased a Dayton 240 watt subwoofer amp from this site. It has recently stopped working properly; now all the speaker it powers does is make a quiet distorted sound (which only occurs if the audio source's volume is up loud enough). I have already checked the speaker, and the RCA connections on the amp; these are okay. I have also tried stripping and restripping the wire coming out of the amp, to no avail. What could possibly be wrong with my amp, and can it be fixed?

Alright, well there's just one thing. The amp came with tinsel leads on the wires and I cut those off and stripped the wire so I could put it into the binding posts of the woofer's enclosure. Do you think that will void the warranty?

Give PE a call. They are the one to answer that question. Their service department is very good. I've used them a time or two with no problem.

In the event that it's not covered by warranty, do you have access to a scope and schematics? Sounds like it could be an issue with the input stage of the amp.... come to think of it don't most sub amps use a SMPS? could be a borked SMPS controller chip (seen a few of those) so you're getting too little voltage on the rails and even trying to play anything would drive it into hard clipping.

Lemme know what you have to work with and I'll do what I can to help.

I had a problem with an older 300-793 unit that I bought on ebay and it got crunched in shipment. I tried finding schematics and asked here but no luck. Finally contacted Jeff at Parts Express Tech Support. He knows these amps and was very helpful. PE has a $30 flat bench fee plus parts and shipping. For not much money I had a working amp in no time. It's still working great. Here's his contact info:
