Thread: whoops....

  1. #1

    Default whoops....

The place where I mix on Friday nights has had some 'rattling and buzzing" issues from the foldback speakers (bought about 4 years ago) on the ceiling.

So the other day the owner took them down and took them back to the local PA installer.

Not happy !.. Both cones were ripped in several places

I guess that means one of us mixing guys has been somewhat over-driving them

    not me of course

I wonder how long the new pair will last
If people want to listen to wiggles, that up to them....

    I prefer music.

Sounds like an opportunity to offer him an alternative design Andy.

Those drivers were obviously way too "slow" to keep up with the pace of the music. What you need, are some really "fast" bass drivers that can handle the quick stops and starts.

    cheers,

I dunno, I think perhaps we were making them go too fast !!

I now eq a lot of the bass out of the foldback in an effort to help them survive, they are only doing vocals most of the time, but these young bands really like the foldback loud!

    What size drivers mate?
The Peavey Lowrider and Emminence Kappalite LF offer pretty good excursion/$$. Assuming they are available and at reasonable cost down under. The Peaveys have 4" coils to dissipate heat and offset thermal compression, plus a Kevlar mix with the paper cone...to resist shearing at xlim.
From those crazed DJ's ya know.

    cheers,

no idea. these are small 8" or maybe 10" EV's mounted on the ceilng above the stage. not my choice I assure you, or my money

there isn't really anywhere else one could put permanent foldbacks, even the foh are not in ideal positions, but at least, being 15's, they have some cone area.

Yeah, don't be stingy with that rolloff button.

Actually, I was just thinking: when I measured myself playing drums with a dB meter, it was between 105-115 dB. That's a pretty loud starting point, when you think about it.
When I'm performing with groups and lucky enough to actually get my own monitor, it's usually pretty close to me, so it doesn't need to be insanely loud. Plus, I actually like my ears, and want them to be useful for other things, like hearing oncoming traffic. When I play with groups who need things LOUD, I just know it's not going to work unless I've got hearing protection.

    Talking Re: whoops....

My dad and a couple of his friends had a stereo shop in the '70s. A speaker company sales guy brought some new speakers to demo for them. He had lots of claims about how great these new speakers are, and how they could handle so much power and you couldn't blow them...

Well, they hooked them up to the most beastly monster amp they had in the shop, I don't remember what model, but it was a McIntosh - and they put an ELP (Emmerson, Lake, and Palmer) album on turntable that they new had some serious bass.

By this time, you could see the sales guy starting to sweat. The speakers sounded good for a bit, but, when that low note hit - the woofer cone litterally SHOT out of the speaker like a projectile. Luckily, nobody was taken out by the flying cone, I don't think anybody had been unfortunate enough to be standing directly in front of it...
