Soldering Station
So, I've got a couple old pencil irons (30W and 40W) and am looking to upgrade, but don't want to spend $$$ on a new Iron/Station.
I see the special on the Stahl station on special here but it seems too inexpensive to be good.
i've always kinda had my eye on the entry level Weller here but have never pulled the trigger.
Looking at the two, they are identical in almost all aspects visually (except color and the labels) and I wonder if they are similar in quality. I would normally say that there is something quality with the Weller that is lacking in he Stahl, but I'd also believe that you pay extra for the Weller name.
So - anyone have experience with both? Anyone have any other recommendations? Thanks!!

Re: Soldering Station
I own that weller and it's fine for just about anything, and i think the new Stahl is pretty much the same thing just cheapened. These are power controlled irons.
My next Iron will probably be the CSI temp controlled iron here:

It's cheaper, yet better than the Weller.

Re: Soldering Station
I'm thinking about jumping on that cheap-o special as well.

Thanks - that CSI looks nice as well. What don't you like about the Weller that has you looking at this one? ...or is it just the tool-man in you?

Re: Soldering Station
Having a calibrated temp control is much more useful than just turning the power up and down. The Weller works perfectly fine for basic hobby electronics and i have no real "need" to upgrade, but I've used stations similar to the CSI and found them a little easier to work with and safer to use on delicate stuff like IC's and thin circuit board traces.

Re: Soldering Station
The Stahl looks like it's the same unit that I picked up from MCM. The main thing I don't like about it is that the cord from the base to the iron is pretty stiff and non-detachable. The Weller is a little better/easier to use. Less weight and heats up quicker, zip-cord type cable, but it's still a hobby type unit, not meant for heavy use. Mine finally died after 5 or 6 years. It's easy to get spoiled using the expensive stuff at the TV station where I used to work. Still, either the Stahl of the $50 Weller are fine for most of us weekend solder slingers.
