Garage Sale Find - Ghetto 901's What 2 DO? Opinions?
I bought these at a garage sale 6 or 7 years ago, $10 bucks.
Used them briefly in a repair shop but now they sit unused in my garage.(taking up space)
Any opinions on what to do? Install new drivers? Toss out? Sell?
Drivers are 4" and NO x-over parts whatsoever inside. Inside was packed with fiberglass before pics taken.
Drivers are pretty old and crusty. They make lots of noise but quality?
Not so much. Looks like DIY-er tried to mimic 901's obviously.
He was an MIT grad, pilot, Vet, smart guy, have had a hard time getting rid of these up til now so either i do something with them or get rid of em.
I could burn them up in my backyard when i have a bonfire, maybe post video?
I will value any and all opinions. THANKS!

It would take someone a lot more creative than I to salvage value out of that.

Put the drivers in a line array and you'll have something listenable. The cab is landfill.

Mmmm, performance art.
1. Soak a full roll of toilet paper overnight in lamp oil, or better, kerosene.
2. Find an amplifier you know to have short-circuit protection.
3. Cut a LARGE hole out of the top of each speaker.
4. Place the TP roll on a pie tin and inside each speaker.
5. Crank the speakers as loud as they go and light the TP.
6. Drive them until they stop!
I suggest playing "Billie Jean", "Enter Sandman" or "Shout at the Devil" (20 points if you know the connection).
You may also want auxilliary sound for your bonfire, because a.) you'll want more bass and b.) who knows how long these poor things will play for.

Preferrably a very meaty PA amp. I am sure that the high quality Bose could withstand about 500watts RMS.

Drivers still good?? If you think about it, the 901 is similar to an open baffle system... or a surround pair... which is what I'd use 'em for. Make a nice surround pair, especially if you don't want to put much in to the cosmetics... wouldn't be looking at 'em much anyway. A little wood putty, a nice paint job, and you got a cheap pair of surrounds that sound real nice!!

The only problem with that is that 901's have a passive EQ in the cab to make the drivers sound somewhat decent. These home made ones don't have that. Granted, it could be an interesting design challenge.

If you decide to get rid of 'em, take to the Goodwill or just put out by the side of the street. Somebody will find some use for them.

To use as surrounds, they wouldn't really need EQ... woofers/subs take care of the bass, and many sound tracks being what they are; a little role-off in the treble would actually sound quite nice.

SO FAR THIS IS MY FAVORITE SUGGESTION. Maybe blast a little Herbie Hancock - "Rockit" thru them? I gotta go listen to some Motley Crew Lyrics so I get the "shout at the devil" reference.

...And technically MJ was burned by pyro during the filming of a commercial...but still, nice connection!

This is probably the best application for any BLOSE speaker.
Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.

A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT HAPPENED TODAY!!

I couldn't stand to risk wrecking an amplifier or receiver while music blared thru these as they burned, so, i settled for a ceremonial silent burn. Just was tired of working around them in my garage, for what i had in them, it was worth the fun.

Whoa... how much power was running through those for that to happen?!
1.21 Gigawatts....

The sound of BLOSE speakers on fire...........probably the most realistic, true to life sound you'll ever get out of them.

An inglorious end to a DIY speaker that someone seems to have put quite a bit of effort into creating, though the concept was flawed.
Did you remove the several thousand $$$ hidden in the secret compartment at the bottom of each speaker before burning them?
