Default Integrating stand volume into cabinets?

This may seem like a dumb idea but I figure I might try it. I have a pair of cabinets of about 14L and stands are about half completed. Now I'm thinking of using drivers that need more than 14L. The stands are rectangular columns 6" wide, 7" deep and about 22" tall which is about 9 liters internal volume. Why couldn't I cut a hole in the bottom of the cabinets and bolt them to the stands with t-nuts and some gasket to join the volume? Any reason not to do this? I'd assume I would need to stuff the bottom of the stands heavily.

I can't think of any reason at all. If the stand + speaker assembly were really tall, you'd have a 1/4 wave resonance to worry about. Zaph did some tests that showed a good amount of damping material should be placed on the bottom of tall towers.

What are the cabs and stands made of, some non-resonant materials I presume? You wouldn't want your cabs to be MDF and your stands solid wood, say, as the stands could add some unwanted resonance.

The total combined height inside would be about 38", so no more than a traditional floor stander. I did read Zaph's article about tall cabinets and damping, so I'll pay attention to damping/stuffing. Materials of the stands will be the same as the cab's, mdf/particle board combination. I think I'll go for it.

before you bolt the two together you might silicone the heck out of them.

Should work out just fine. You can always stuff the bottoms with dacron (pillow stuffing). I did one like that and used the speaker gasket tape with small bolts (not wood screws) to attach the stands.
