Default Is this driver worth playing with?

I have an Infinity Reference Series 1011w 10 inch subwoofer that I've on a shelf since 1997....Does anybody have any suggestions for this, I'd be most interested in a small sub for my computer room for a 2.1 set up....music orientated....

    here are the parameters...

Or am I wasting my time and money on a POS?

    I'll consider all ideas

    Thanks,

I don't think it will work as a sub as well as a woofer in a three way center. Getting it to have an f3 of 40 involves a lot of eq. It does not have much xmax 4.5mm I think getting it to play well to 55hz is easy but that is not that deep.

just drop it in this box

    http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=260-628

    use this amp

    http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-805

it may be okay the nice thing about this plan is if it is POS for sq. Buy this and drop it in the same box.

    with the same amp

I would eBay it and pick up a later Infinity Reference model. 1030W or newer can be had for not too many banana peels. They are great performers for little money.

The 1030W in 1.5 cubes tuned to 25 Hz will hit an F3 of 23 Hz and will take the 240 watt amp with ease. In 0.75 cubic feet sealed with the 240 w/boost it will get to the upper 20's with no excursion problems.

There is a one NIB on eBay right now.

Or, look for the newest reference series. They are designated with the "60" affix, such as "1060". They have 13mm Xmax, large voice coils etc etc etc. I have seen them for 60-80 bucks now.

I should add that my models call for a 60 - 80 Hz low pass.

    Thanks,
A 4th order BP box with that thing that's around 1.1 cu.ft. will get you to 42 Hz.

A 6th order BP box around 1.4 cu.ft. will not extend that low, but will be considerably more efficient in its passband. If it was me I'd be tempted to try the 6th order BP box, but that's only because I haven't built one in awhile .

FWIW, the "60" series are the only subs listed on Infinity's site at the moment. Even the "Kappa Perfect" info has been pulled.

Infinity used to list three models as being current - Reference, Kappa and Kappa Perfect. Now it's just the Reference Series.

whats all the hype about infinity subs? Isn't the typical DIY sub (dayton titanics, peerless XLS/XXLS) much better anyway? educate me

I doubt they are better than the Kappa Perfect series. The Reference line are just a very high value sub; comparable or even superior, to the Dayton Quatro line. I have a pair of the 8" Reference series and they are monsters (within their limits). Clean and low with good xmax, it is everything a good sub should be, it is just ugly. I also have a pair of the Kappa Perfect 10.1 and it would be very tough to sell me on anything else.

They are targeted to the car audio crowd so there is often a knee-jerk "stay away" response to them.

that is some very eye opening opinion. I've been following DIYmovileaudio.com for quite some time, and most people look down on infinity gear. However, most people agree that their subs were "their first good sub" back in the day (and there was particular mention of the 'green one') but all of them have moved on to much better things since then, and these are the people who praise HT subs like the dayton titanics, Peerless XLS/XXLS, JBL etc.etc.

Personally I have always wanted to try the infinity subs, mainly because they are so readily available used on cragslist for not much. But there are so many different models and series, I don't even know where to start.

    Like this one:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Infinity-Kapp...lenotsupported

what amazes me is the sensitivity of 93db but yet with a good 12mm xmax, I don't see many other examples of such efficient subs with respectable excursion
