Default Lets see your RS315HF builds

I have a pair of RS 315 Hf drivers that I have been playing with for the last year in various ported and PR'd boxes with decent reslults, but I'm not blown away just yet....They all seem somewhat muddy or one note wonder-ish when used in a music application. I'm gonna try a pair 2.5 cuft sealed boxes next with my O-audio 500w amps. My biggest issue is loosing the bottom end.

I've been building my subs ported and PR'd for deep extension for HT use, is this what my problem is? I need something that will be great for Music and HT use...

    What builds worked for you?

Lets's hear about them and see them...

    thanks

I have the same trouble you do built 20 or more subs purchased a few more. My final solution was this a pair of nht1259's in sealed 3 cu ft cabinets plus a rss390hf in an IB the nht1259's run from 50hz to 100hz the rss390hf runs from 18hz to 50 hz. with HT I turn the rss390 up a bit with music I turn it down a bit. an nht1259 in a 3 cu ft box is close to a rss315 in a 2.5 cu ft box. first two shots are the nhts. next two are the rss390 as an IB last is the ht the rss390 is behind the viewing couch. can you say basssss shaker!

    Hey,

A bit of advice based on my experience on this board and elsewhere...

People tend to often blame "muddy" or "one-notey" bass strictly on the enclosure design. For example, the first thought may be that your low-tuned ported design is introducing some sort of group delay or something that is affecting the sound.

Truth be told, in my opinion often the bigger problem is a mismatch between the response of the sub and the natural response or gain of your room. The extra extension of the sub may be overloading the room at 35 Hz or 30 Hz or 27 Hz or wherever and creating a bloated sort of sound.

I know you were also looking at adding some sort of EQ to your design. I would suggest leaving your enclosure as it is (ported or PR), and use the extra MDF money to buy your Feedback Destroyer. Rather than rebuild the sub completely, and THEN try to re-eq it. Might as well use the benefits of the ported design to your advantage and then EQ around that. Unless the enclosure size is a problem, then do what you gotta do.

    That's my take on things!

Darren you have a good point. My Ht is very difficult to get the right bass in. due to size and shape of the room.

    Pete,

I have a 315HF in a ~60L sealed box using an O-audio 500W amp. Sounded like garbage when I first fired it up and had a good listen. I bought a mic and preamp and did some measurements using REW and it became quite apparent why it sounded so bad. I've since moved the sub to a different spot and added a Feedback Destroyer setup using REW measurments. ATM I'm using a 6db hard-knee house curve crossed at 100Hz, in the event you do some research on this. I'm still tinkering and I may try a little less aggressive curve but i gotta say it now sounds REALLY good. The only complaint now is it runs out of gas sometimes (xmax limits).

Not to hijack this thread, but I have been weighing the benefits of a system like philiparcario described. Are you using a receiver? How are you separating the signals between the 2? What about with, say for example, using the x-over built into this plate amp to go to the front subs (the NHT's in your setup): http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-804 , and then the LFE output of the receiver for the rear sub (the IB in your setup)?

the nht1259's or rss315's driven by the sa240 amp would need a high pass. I use this amp for the ib

    http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=A402

    I have the older a-401

this is the manual link. I feed 100hz and down to this from my receiver

    http://www.reckhorn.com/manual/manualA402-3.pdf this runs the rss390 18 hz to 50hz.

it sends two channels out to the amp for the 1259's they run from 50hz to 100hz. so it is really pretty good setup.

this is my ebay seller for the reckhorn takes 50 days to show up,but he is very reliable seller.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Reckhorn-A-402-S...3286.m20.l1116

you could make this setup for 280 plus 218 total of 498 for 3 sub amps and 2 rss315's and 1 rss390 that is 275 plus 160 or 435

933 drivers and amps and crossover. the subs run as mono but it is close to undetectable. gives you a sub system that runs from 18hz to 100 hz at about 117db with very little distortion. three volume controls. some eq. I have 0 problems with it for the price. I have heard 3000 commercial with less detail.

I would agree with doing some room measurements. REW is great... you will learn a lot about your room and sub placement. Getting a BFD can be a great thing as well, but see what you can do with moving the sub around first. EQ'ing things improved my Quatro 15 sealed in a 2.6' box quite a bit.

Lately, I've made an adapter for my RSS12-HF in the same box, and THAT is quite a improvement in sound quality all by itself, so I can say they can sound good in a sealed.

For another way to go with Phillip's sub and sub-subwoofer setup, you can use another Reckhorn product: http://www.reckhorn.com/index.php?ln=en&prod=f1 This little guy provides a highpass, and two mono sub lowpasses that can be adjusted separately. So you would run one up high, dial the other one down low... You might want to modify the internal infrasonic high pass, if you need to go really low, a nice thread on modifying the F1 is here: http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...fications.html
Not my thread, but I've done most of the mods there, and have been coming up with steeper slopes, various IF filter tunings, and a mod for stereo subs... but that's further thread drift! PM me if you go this way and want advice...

I got mine from CSS, and it only took 4-5 days shipping, BTW, despite the Canada thing...

I use the f-1 for my computer it would work. with 3 sa240's you don't need as much juice to amp the rss390 if used as an IB. that would cost 430 for the drivers 327 for the amps and the f-1 is about 65 around 810 to 815 . for a very nice sub system. plus you don't need to wait 50 days for the a-402 amp. That was good to be reminded that the f-1 would do the trick.

Just curious: Do you run the 2 fronts in series at 2 ohms (I read the manual and it said the amp was 2 ohm stable but the "best sound" would come from an 8 ohm load. (Strange given that the website indicated a consistent .02% thd despite the load...)

This is a very cool idea for a sub(system) setup. I appreciate you giving out the details.

    The Big Bad Woof.

Single driver in sealed box, net about 1.5 cubic feet, with discontinued 250W remote amp. Very musical and goes plenty low for me on music and HT. Plenty quick for HT. Unless you require really really low bass, I would seal the box for this sub.

Been swamped with lots of things. Only done two projects in the last year or so: a taller version of Shawn's exceptional Triska and a rebuild of the cabinets for the Princess (my daughter outgrew the pink paint).

Anyone looking for an 8" PR sub, you can't go wrong with the Triska. Exceptionally musical for the size and cost. Running it with my Melange project in my office -- that project is basically the NSB MTM I built before, in a tower configuration.

Plus, in the interests of full disclosure, I don't really like the new forum format.

Hope all is well with you.

You know you can make it LOOK like the old one, right? I have mine set up that way. It does make a difference.
