    Default Tang Band build ideas???

    My inexperience is frustrating...
I picked up a couple of different pairs of TangBands and am looking for some ideas on what to do with them. One pair is W4-657SH 4", and the other is W3-879S 3". Using speaker workshop and winISD, the vent is supposed to be over a meter long in a box that's roughly 3" x 4" x 2.5".
Any suggestions on making a speaker box for these drivers that's more reasonable in size? Maybe combining the 3" and the 4" in a box?

    W4-657SH: Power Handling: 30 watts RMS/60 watts max *VCdia: 1" *Znom: 8 ohms *Re: 6.0 ohms *Frequency range: 65-16,000 Hz *Fs: 65 Hz *SPL: 88 dB 1W/1m *Vas: .22 cu. ft. *Qms: 3.32 *Qes: .43 *Qts: .38 *Xmax: 3 mm *Dimensions: A: 4-15/16", B: 3-3/4", C: 2-7/8"

    W3-879S: Voice coil diameter: 3/4" * Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms * Re: 6.6 ohms * Frequency range: 105-20,000 Hz * Fs: 105 Hz * SPL: 86 dB 1W/1m * Vas: .06 cu.ft. * Qms: 7.22 * Qes: .65 * Qts: .59 * Xmax .5 mm * Dimensions: Overall Diameter: 3-5/8", Cutout Diameter: 3", Mounting Depth: 2", Magnet Diameter: 2-5/8"

I've thought about a BIB, but I'm hoping for something smaller.
    Thanks,
    Mike

1m port?!?!? I would consider trying the model again with a larger box. I find that 3" drivers generally want at least 2l, especially if the qt is above .6. Also, what size port diameter have you specified? If the box size seems right, try a smaller diameter port. This will shorten the required length, for a given tuning.

OK, maybe I need some clarification with WinISD.
I put in the speaker parameters and took the box size the program recommended.
Can I put in a desired size, say 2 liters tuned to 65 Hz, and then will the program give me acceptable dimensions? Doing so gave me a port length of .57 meters at .047 diameter.
I guess I'm thinking I need to go by the box dimensions that come up with the parameters I input.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I don't use winisd, so I can't attest to the customization of the box size.

If you have excel use Jeff Bagby's Woofer Box + ciruit designer. This program has a great deal of flexibility.

Keep in mind that you will need to compensate for BSC loss. I compensate for a small amount of BSC by tuning with a slight midbass hump. I found that the little PE 3" TB exclusive full range worked well tuned to 85hz with a 2.5l box.

I have some W3-879S' and plan to build some computer speakers in the next few weeks.
Since I already have the cabinets, and they're a little over 2L, I'm not sure how to determine the correct tuning frequency for the port.

When I was active in DIY, not too many had computers, and these awesome design and modeling programs you guys use didn't exist.

Is there anything I can use for my mac?

    I just plugged into winisd & it recommends a .217 ft3 volume.

Now go to the vent tab and change the port diameter to 1.5 inches. This gives a 3.17 inch length. Should be ok and certainly more doable. Also, see Wolf as he uses Tang Band quite a bit. He can help you tweak it beyond winisd.
If dynamite was dangerous, do you think they'd sell it to an idiot like me?

Well, Mike, PatrickM used a W4-657SH in my 3CR-Ti cabinet, and used a different notch filter for it. That is one option, since you already have the cabinets.... (I'm pretty sure Ed Froste would purchase those from you given the opportunity.)

I'm actually drawing a blank on the -879's. I'm not even certain what driver that is. You could build the box I used for my W3-517S1-DCR box (blog), and be golden, or; just keep the baffle size and volume the same, and bore a 1" hole in the 3/4" material as Raw Acoustics suggests for all 3" TB drivers.

I just used the winisd online calulator, and got a 5.96 litre cabinet, pretty much the same as the other online calculators I had tried.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Here is the 879s

    Thanks for the info, guys.

Wolf is right I am still looking for more W4-657SHs, I built the "Flames" using these drivers as a OB Mid. Now I'm trying to build out a full 7.1 set to match.

But either way here is another use for these drivers:

Just like one of the posts yesterday, I'm not seeing anything in Gowa's posts, but when I hit the quote button, it looks like he's posted a pic.
    Anybody else having this problem?

    These are online calculalators.
What I was looking for was some software.

    How good is this winisd?
I do have an old windows machine.

    Mike,

As to your more general questions about why WinSID is spitting out unreasonable port lengths: I've often had this experience with the initial model. Remember that the modeled port length is directly tied to the tuning AND the cross-section of the vent. A really long port would be required if the cross-section is very large. By manually entering a smaller cross-section, you will see the port length will be shortened for the same tuning. This was counter-intuitive to me when I first tried Unibox and WinSID. My initial thought was that a small diameter port would have to be long and a wide port would have to be short to be equivalent. Keep in mind that as the cross-section goes down, the velocity of the air moving within the vent goes up. At some point the turbulence within the vent will generate audible noise. This is less likely to be a problem with smaller drivers than with large displacement subwoofers. WinSID will model the air velocity of any given port, so you can always check to see if there are any obvious problems with your enclosure, before you start building.

One other note: one of Zaph's personal design mantra's is never putting a small driver (< 4-inches) in a vented enclosure (http://zaphaudio.com/mantras.html). The limited experience I have in building PC speakers (for near-field listening) indicates this is a valid approach when we are talking about standard Bass Reflex enclosures that may be played at moderate to high volume. My 1st speakers sounded great to me, until I nudged the volume nob up, then they fell apart in a hurry. I'm much happier with the same drivers in a sealed box. Wolf's (and other's) double reflex designs, aperiodic enclosures and horns are different animals, as they can effective address some of the principle short-comings of a BR design, at the cost of additional complexity in design and construction. As with all elements of speaker design, there are trade-offs to any particular approach. The more you read and listen, the better your chances of success with your project.

    Good luck!

    Squib
