    Default Future Speakers advice\thoughts

I've semi completed 4 sets of speakers, 2 12" subs, and one center since Nov. They are the Tritrix, Scrappy's, Recession Busters, HO and HF subs. 80 % complete, but all are listenable. Yes, I got the bug and living in a mid climate area, I made my two kids speakers and I took what was left. I have a man cave( basement) that is 11 X 19 listening area, but the basement is a L shape towards the front. The back is 12' and the L is 30'. I was thinking about Zaph's 3.5 or should I go with a reference 2 way, since I have the 12" HF sub? I was wondering about the 71s or jay's poor mans high end monitors? I listen to music 90 % of the time. I read the 500 dollar thread, and I could spend that for drivers and crossover, lumber doesn't count but, are the 3.5 two much for what I have? I have an Denon 110 powering the 07 tritrix now, no problems and a HK 75 W for back up. I listen to 70's, to Josh to Jazz. Yes, I'm in mid life. One day I will make a diy event.
    Thanks,
    Tim

I'm not an expert and I haven't really heard the speakers you mention, but from the reviews of the other Zaph projects and from hearing other RS series designs, I'd say the 3.5's would be amazing. With music you want to have something integrate very well, sub integration up higher is always going to be harder than just for the last octave. Having a full ranger is usually prefered for music listening, rather than a 2-way that doesn't reach very low with a sub.

As far as "too much speaker" I don't think you can have it . The only thing that may be an issue is if you listen to really low levels big speakers usually sound a bit weak in the bass department, but that isn't something a "loudness" button wouldn't fix.

The only problem I see would be that the 3.5 is a 4 ohm speaker and I'm not sure what your reciever can handle.

Hope this helps and maybe this bump will get someone else in here.

Thanks for the reply, you answered a few questions. I'm running the Triune 07 with my Denon, no problems. I probably didn't asked the right questions. Here's a few more.
1.) Is a good MT with a sub just as good as a three way floor?

I'd say a good MT with a sub is usually prefered for Home Theater use, but for Music a floor standing 3 way or deep reaching 2-way is usually prefered.

That said, I have a pair of MT that I cross to a sub and really enjoy it for music. I do about 50/50 music and Movies/TV. Most of my music isn't too technical though and usually has quite a bit of low bass.

One thing that is nice about doing something like the 3.5 would be since you already have the 12" RSS you could High pass your 3.5's when watching movies and have the 12" take everything down low. And when you want to listen to music turn the sub off and run your towers full range. Another option is if you listen to bass heavy music or just loud music in general, you could run with the sub to take bass duties off your towers

If you went with a pair of TM's that didn't go too deep you wouldn't have the option to turn the sub off if you didn't like the way it integrated with it on.

Floor standers if you can get away with them (WAF) give you a lot more flexibility.

Thanks Justin! You answered my question. Man cave, no need for WAF. She has the rest of the house she calls hers.

And the answer is: It depends…

IMO, a properly executed 3 way will trump a 2 way (even a 2 way + sub) in the midrange due to less induced distortion, for the simple reason that the mid doesn’t have the excursion requirements the woofer has. I also suggest that a speaker with an f3 in the 30’s or even 40 will be fine for most music applications, and a sub would superfluous.

That said- …There are many examples of 2 way designs in your price range that would be sonically superior to the Triune.

Thanks Curt. I'm really enjoying your speaker designs, looking to go to the next level, this hobby is fun and rewarding. I didn't know which way to go for the size and layout of my basement.

How to improve on a L shape basement accoustics is a future thread.
