Newbie Question
My question might get some eyes rolling, but I'm new to the scene - bare with me please.
I found a posting on ebay for various models of Philips speakers (left from shelf systems) that appear to have some decent looking cabinets and ribbon tweeters (Beston perhaps?).
I've managed to look up some old reviews of the systems themselves, which did not get great rankings (surprise surprise).
So what I'm trying to get at is: given the $50 - $90 for a pair of what appear to be nice cabinets and ribbon tweeters (I'd like to own some ribbons just for the heck of it) and use some stuff from Parts Express to make them better. i.e. dampening material, new cross over, perhaps even new mid/bass driver and keep the ribbon.
I know much of my question is dependent on measurements / technical aspects of the speakers, but has anyone done something like this with any success?

btw - attended the Tent Sale and listened to about 25% of the speakers in the competition at the hotel - gotta say it looks like a heluva lot of fun.

Re: Newbie Question
for 89 a pair they may be worth it. with the bing dot com discount they are 81 a pair. find out the height depth etc.

Re: Newbie Question
I've done a few, rebuilt speakers and re-used cabinets. These speakers you are looking at might work well, but it would be based on how well the boxs are built and if the drivers are any count. They do look interesting though, might fun to see what the tweeter and mid are like.
Heres pic of some I've re-built:

Re: Newbie Question
yeah on the ebay boxes you need a decent /mid tweeter they would not be easy to change out. the woofer could be improved or swapped . Use internal stuffing ,braces ,alter the crossover. you could come up with a winner or not. That is the way it is with mods to commercial gear.
I had a subwoofer from focal: a cub model.
I had a subwoofer driver from a totem lightening sub. two minutes of hand sanding the opening just a bit bigger the totem driver fit, huge improvement.

Re: Newbie Question
Thanks for the replies - I've made an offer on

They're a little cheaper, plus I don't know that I want to mess with the 3 way speaker.
I'm thinking the replacement mid/woofer to be the 4" Dayton full range so I can get a cross over around the 4,000 range for the tweet.
Thanks all!

To respond to your note - It doesn't seem the seller put the dimensions for this particular speaker I purchased. I'll keep everyone posted once they come.
