DYNAVOX LW6004PMR 6-1/2" Woofer Revisited
Has anyone measured this driver in the past?
This models very well and sounds great, but WinISD shows this having very limited power below about 150hz.
It does not seem to be very popular as there are very few designs to be found.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Ask Shawn A.
He's the only person besides Lindell that has used it.
FWIW, this woofer will get down and boogie without complaining, as I've heard Shawn's design.

Excellent driver up to 2k. Can't really comment on the behavior at lower freq's 'cus I have used them in a 3-way system crossed from 150-2k.
They play really loud as mids.... I hear parts-express dudes runs them in small closed box with excellent resaults.

Can you elaborate more on your design?

I also heard that woofer in a 2-way and it can certainly handle the juice but I think there is a problem with the leads hitting the cone when it gets extended. I also considered it for a mid in a 3-way.

Xmax: 2.45 mm
I guess that you have this driver? I also heard that woofer in a 2-way and it can certainly handle the juice but I think there is a problem with the leads hitting the cone when it gets extended. I also considered it for a mid in a 3-way.

On the last part- that is an issue with some of the units coming off the production line. Some have longer tinsels than others, making them more susceptible to lead slap. This was the case on one of Shawn's -5004 5.25", but not on mine.
You can always carefully shorten them to eliminate the problem by cutting an resoldering closer, but be careful not to go too short.
The other thing- the Xmax is probably a little more than that on the 6.5", and both the 5.25 and 6.5" can push more still in the throw without them sounding bad. Xmech is quite large...

It's not an issue unless you are feeding it full LFE from a demanding movie soundtrack. I have mine in a ~.35 ft^3 vented enclosure and I've yet to have the woofer bottom out.

Shawn,
How do you have this tuned? Port size? F3?

Re: DYNAVOX LW6004PMR 6-1/2" Woofer Revisited
I sent mine back after playing Sade's song 'Lover's Rock'.
I wasn't familiar with Slap at that time but would not have kept them anyway. These are not cheap units. They are actually priced a bit higher than Vifa, Seas Prestige & Peerless.

I bought mine from MCM a couple of years ago for $25 each.

Whoopsy, had a typo last night. The volume is ~.45 ft^3. Now as far as tuning, I went for a different kind of goal than I usually aim for in that I tuned them to emulate the transfer function of the Voxxer-M's little brothers, the Clonads which use the 5004 woofer. I tuned the 6004 to 47 Hz to achieve that goal. I used a slot port for both designs which work GREAT. For the 6004 I have a port 7" wide x .75" tall x 12.25" long that runs parallel to the rear wall of the enclosure.
Here's the WinISD model for the transfer function. The red trace is for the 6004 and the white/gray trace is for the 5004:

Yep, there's a big ole' hump in there and it does a lot to help the 5004 sound like a much larger driver. The case with the 6004 isn't quite as good as I think it sounds a wee bit too bassy on some tracks. It can be reduced somewhat by lowering the tuning frequency.
And here's the excursion results. Same color legend as above:

Both are shown with a 25W signal applied. Yep, they go into over-excursion by a fair margin. The trick is that neither woofer really cared other than the lead slap I ran into with the 5004. The 6004 didn't have nearly the degree of slap and buzz that the little 5004 exhibited. There was a tiny bit evident with the 6004 but with some careful re-routing of the leads, much like Wolf described, the problem was a problem no more.
I also have the big 8" 8004 as well and it's a beast and a half. Lead slap and output will be no problem with it for sure. I found that the Dynavox woofers to be pretty darn nice but a wee bit pricey. Lucky for me as well I got all of mine at a pretty nice discount.

Re: DYNAVOX LW6004PMR 6-1/2" Woofer Revisited
Thanks Shawn.
How would you rate the 6004 vs other 6.5" drivers out there, as far as over all sound quality?
Do you have any pics of your design with the 6004?
How do you attach the grapics from WinISD?
Thanks

Re: DYNAVOX LW6004PMR 6-1/2" Woofer Revisited
I heard the woofer with a North D25 tweeter and it sounded warm.
A friend has four of these that he used to replace the woofers in his Bostons. He just dropped them in. The Bostons are sealed units which made it easier. Also, he is not speaker friendly. He cranked them on many occasions without any sign of them giving up but he is also experiencing that slap on some low frequency material. Very Irritating to say the least. My opinion is that these are over priced as far as performance but they certainly look impressive. Just my opinion.

That warmness could be due to poor xover, or wrong tuning.

Re: DYNAVOX LW6004PMR 6-1/2" Woofer Revisited
Wolf, did you help with xover or cabinet design?
I currently have this driver in a 1.2cuft enclosure tuned to about 38hz. It goes deep but does not have much punch. Would it "tighten up" in a smaller enclosure?
It is matched with a North Creek tweeter and a dayton 2k xover with an lpad to the tweeter.
Sounds good but I do not know how it measures. I am positive it could be improved.

Nope, it was all Shawny-boy for that one.

You'd have to ask Shawn.
