Hay Trevor:
What degree are you going for at Devry? I imagine the price for DeVry is quite pricey now of days. You better study real hard as DeVry loves to enroll just about anyone and then wash them out by the end of the first year. Then those people are stuck with a huge student loan and nothing to show for it, you really have to be dedicated to go all the way.
The DeVry in Phoenix, Arizona was really nice, I started in Atlanta, Georgia and finished my BSEET in Phoenix, as Atlanta only was qualified for the Associate program when I went many, many moons ago.
There are a few one year schools that provide Electronic courses that provide good training and job opportunities that are better for the money and time. If the Job you have is paying for your education, then go to Devry.

I am planning to go for the ect program. It is more hands on related, and is somthing I could really get into. The thing I run into most in the repair would, is how the circuit works, or why those parts were used. I would really like to have knowledge about design cause I think it would really help with my current repair knowledge...

Who wants to repair, when you could design

True. Design is fun until the fixers tell you the design is broken.

It's good to hear from you Trevor. It's also great that you are learning electronics with a "hands on" approach and plan to support that experience with education. I'll be the first to admit that my EE degree seemed to cover more mathematics than practical knowledge and that I learned quite a bit that wasn't taught directly at college just by fixing things (mostly amps and pinball machines and other miscellaneous "broken items"). I also learned quite a bit from my dad who had a limited education in electronics but decades of experience. There really isn't a substitute for experience, especially when it comes to working on electronic equipment. Anyway, it sounds like you are doing well and I wish you the best with your future!

Re: OT, Gusse who's back...
AMEN! My work is paying for my college at DeVry and there's no way I would go there unless they were paying for it. I did 5 years at Kent State with 5 degrees changes and took some time off to think about what I really wanted to do. Got a killer job now that pays for school so I figured I may as well take advantage of it and let them pay the big bucks. When I say big bucks, I mean $550/credit hour. Yeah. Complete effing rip-off. I only chose DeVry because both of my brothers graduated there with BIS degrees and are doing extremely well.
jtaylor, I get the same feeling from my DeVry campus (Columbus, OH). I can't believe the type of people they let in. They should be shot, seriously. They had one guy trying to apply for the FAFSA and he needed help using the computer. He was extremely slow, looked impoverished, but they're thinking he'll get federal aid and they'll take it. My adviser told me he made over $90k last year enlisting students. Complete scum, if you ask me.
Anywho, Trevor, I would think long and hard before going to DeVry. If you do, for the love of God do not take any electives or basic classes there like math, english, your humanities, sciences or electives. Take them all at a cheap community college that will transfer to DeVry. You will save tens of thousands of dollars. I think you're in Columbus so you could easily take them all at Columbus State.

There was definitely a knowledge gap between what I learned in college and what I needed to do my job. Short on experience, I had to find it anyway I could. Many of the things that I learned in college prepared me to be a good designer. At the time my experienced friends looked at the coursework and passed it off as unneeded academic exercises. I use most of what I learned and am really glad for the in-depth theory. Some of the things that stuck with me the most were the more abstract design principles. There was a period of my career where I felt like I would never use those things though.
Keep in mind that you are not just paying for instruction, you are meeting people who may lead to career connections.
Perhaps the assumption was that individuals were already in the field or would be taken in as an apprentice somewhere. (Computer Science/Business IS)
