I'm just that guy. www.sru.edu Rock Solid.
"It has been remarked that if one selects his own components, builds his own enclosure, and is convinced he has made a wise choice of design, then his own loudspeaker sounds better to him than does anyone else's loudspeaker. In this case, the frequency response of the loudspeaker seems to play only a minor part in forming a person's opinion."

your driver could be in a small 2 way sat about .25cu ft sealed it would need to cross to a sub around 100hz. the f3 would be about 92hz you could hi pass at about 2000hz
very good price on it.
www.parts-express.com/pdf/299-231s.pdf
the above link shows the graph . the driver has a very smooth response from 100hz to about 2000 hz . all 3 color lines stay close that means it sounds the same off axis. or as you walk around the room. looks like you can use this in a mtm setup.
I event think it would be okay ported, maybe 1 cu ft for a mtm and .5 cu ft for two way

Re: More Tymphany buyouts!!
the midwoofer looks really good with this
tweeter.
a mtm crossed around 1800 - 2000 hz sealed would be in a .5 to .6 box ported about 1cu ft box. both drivers look smooth and easy to cross around that number maybe a 2nd order.

68 dollars in drivers for each mtm. 83 forgot to add the tweeter

Re: More Tymphany buyouts!!
thanks guys. now i must convince SWMBO that these are needed lol i was thinking a curved style cabinet with some of that carbon fiber for the baffle and a rich wood veneer would look good.

Re: More Tymphany buyouts!!
Seems like this woofer has similar specs and better extension than the Exclusive - am I missing something? http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=299-234

What tweeter would mate well with that as a nice computer monitor? I am hoping to get back to building again after dealing with a couple of significant family and friend health problems. I could use the therapy of saw dust and solder.

angaria,
i was strictly speaking from a "looks great" perspective in referencing the HDS woofer.

Re: More Tymphany buyouts!!
A few months ago, I would have been all over the Exclusives deal. Now... not so much. Undoubtably it's a great driver, but I suspect that the ZA14W08 is better in most regards and about the same price.

P.E. just made a mistake on their writeup, not all that uncommon for them...
The Peerless HDS woofers with the Nomex cones may have a slightly different sound than the ones with the PPB (PolyPropylene "Black"), but, when comparing two that are otherwise the same, such as the HDS Nomex and HDS PP, they are basically interchangeable.
Joe R., designer of the "Elsinore" speakers indicated a slight preference for the Nomex, over the Polyproplyene, but both are good.
Based on looking at the response charts and the distortion measurements by Zaph, I prefer the HDS non-phase plug models over the HDS "Exclusive" ones with the phase plugs.
I think I saw someone posted measurements of the 299-234 on the AVS forum? But the person who measured them said they're still working on getting their measurement system setup and wasn't too confident on his measurements.

Re: More Tymphany buyouts!!
I'm bummed that they don't have the 830881 in that list (but do have the 5.5" version, the 831882) because that has been the unobtainium part of my beloved Alpheus MkII three-way project. I'll add that any woofers in that line (HDS/phase plug) are phenomenal in my opinion.
They do have a "substitute" driver (830872 - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...TOKEN=77362029 ) that can be used with the Alpheus MkII design (I adjusted the crossover and a few people have built this version with success). The modified crossover is shown below...

...and the remaining details for the project are under the Alpheus MkII project link at my site below.

I apologize about the self-promotion of one of my projects but there are very few projects on my site that can still be built (due to driver availability) and this one is still one of my all-time favorites.

Re: More Tymphany buyouts!!
I'm pretty sure that 299-234 (Peerless 830911) is an iteration of the following:
http://www.tymphany.com/850489
Due to the phase plug attached to the pole piece, the inductive reactance of this one and the 831882 is very low. Non-phase plug HDS woofers' is not as low.

I don't know about better in most regards, but probably very similar in most respects. Distortion levels are on par with one another, and both have very smooth and extended high end.
Flip a coin.
For $25, I'd go with the PPB version and save the few bucks. However, the truncated flange adds a slight aggravation factor.

Might want to add that these Peerless 5.25" drivers have larger Sd than the ZA14W08, which is smaller than typical 5.25" drivers. As a result, they are better suited for a non-subwoof'ed vented 2-way system with adequate bass extension and power handling for music listening.

If drivers could be judged solely on specifications then perhaps you have a strong argument. However, my bias towards certain cone materials in certain applications influences my personal preference. You must also consider the application of the driver in judging which is better because speaker/crossover design parameter restrictions will differ between them.

Re: More Tymphany buyouts!!
Did anyone else notice that the specs on the buyout 831882 are not the same as Madisound's 831882 specs? They even call it a 5.75" driver.
