Sub or Woofer?
It's tradition that I build my brother's Christmas & birthday present. He received my first version of the Peerless HDS/Vifa bookshelf speakers that Jay Kim designed for his birthday this year. He is very happy with them. Christmas-that's easy. A small sub to supplement the low end would be perfect. The Triska would be great. I already have a Dayton 70 watt plate amp that never found a home. With the DVC 8" & passives, I'm at $59. That $ buys some nice 8" woofers-like the Usher 8137A, or the RS225, or the Peerless 830869. So the question is, if the F3 is in the same ballpark, does the Triska offer any advantages over one of these woofers in a ported box other than Xmax? Anything else in that price range I should consider? The small size and good comments is what drew me to the Triska. This would be for music only and will probably be used at his computer desk, so a large box is not an option.
Thanks,
Tom

Re: Sub or Woofer?
Take a woofer like the RS225 that is designed for woofer and not sub duties. The woofer is more sensitive but has less x-max. This means that it wont be able to play as loud given enough power. The rs225 will also play cleaner at higher frequencies. Dedicated subwoofers usually will be a better overall fit but I can't say that for certain in this case.
You could try modeling all of your choices in the WBCD to find the best fit. Generalizations will only take you so far.
