I'm (generally) not one to bit$h about speaker companies overcharging for their products, but for some reason this one stands out. Maybe it's because I've used this particular driver. (It's a truly lovely driver.)
Cheers

Re: Look Familiar?
Surface mounted no less. I guess that you have to pay extra for them to flush mount it.

Re: Look Familiar?
Wow, we might have all just become rich! I'm going to make a pair right now and sell them for the low price of $1999, thats like $450 off, anybody interested?

Re: Look Familiar?
Probably a nice match for a $15000 5 watt tube amp and $1000 cables. They don't have to find too many suckers for that price.

Re: Look Familiar?
Of all the commercial designs I have seen so far, this has to be the most rediculously over price speaker I have ever seen. Why would anyone spend that much money of something like that. Blows my mind.

That's actually a pretty small markup compared to what you'll find here:

Re: Look Familiar?
Wow, I see nothing has changed regarding commercial stuff. I could regal with my tales of adventure when examining, measuring and listening to higher-priced offerings. Folks would still insist on a certain brand or price range, even when confronted with lower price, better build quality, superior SQ and measurements proving it. It's the customers money, just trying to get them better SQ for less $$. "If I spend more, I'll get more quality" was their mind-set.

Re: Look Familiar?
The best part is, we can build it for a couple of bucks, but the buyers of these are pumping cash into circulation around the world - and it isn't my money they are spending. Beautiful how it works that way!
Far be it for me to call these people crooks, or say they are over-charging! If they sell enough to cover costs and make their house payment, then obviously they are priced right. If they cannot move enough to turn a buck, then they are not priced right.
As with over-priced imported cars, wines, furniture, electronics etc, the correct price is the price the consumer is willing to spend. People who spend 3,000 bucks on boutique DVD players have never seen an Oppo, or if they have they cannot reconcile the price-tag with the performance so they literally do not see the difference. Speakers are no different. Look how many people buy Morel drivers!

Re: Look Familiar?
Aw garwsh guys...
What about the cabinets? The silver wire? The cardas binding posts? What about the packaging cost? Delivered overseas cost? Marketing cost? Prototype cost? You know the stuff that needs to be accounted for? That's worth the 1000% markup innit?
Anyway, I have a pair of those drivers... Is there a link to the needles? I should do something with them.

I agree, he should sell it for the cost of material only.

Re: Look Familiar?
As one who owned his own business for five years it takes a lot of work. Often working 16 hours a day or more, and putting up ones house, car or more as collateral. Just looking at the raw costs and saying they are making a bundle could be erroneous.
A company must pay for rent, testing equipment, employees, tax preparers, accountants, stock, a qualified audio engineer and more.
I'm not saying the product is not overpriced, but to simply to jump in and assume the final cost of the speaker is the raw materials costs is mis-informed.
That being said, the market will tell weather the customers think the product is worth $1999. I say if you have a good idea, have the guts to try it, and it flies then good for you. As long as you are not doing anything illegal.
p.s. But I am glad I don't have to pay $1999
p.s.s this discussion has peaked my interest on how they sound

What follows is an excerpted portion of a review of a preamp by Alan Sircom in hi-fi+, the last bit being the interesting turn of phrase, the rest providing context:
"What the Hell is that?"
"It's a preamplifier. It takes its signals from the CD player and controls the big power amp."
"It looks like something Captain Nemo might have used. How much is it?"
"Er, about £19,000."

Something has to be off here?
Using bass box pro I loaded values from the data base, which shows the box size for this driver to be very small!
Around 5" x 5" x 6.75".
If bbpro is correct most of that loudspeaker is mainly used as a stand.

Probably not that great, as is...
Thin Ice Alert: normally I would be reluctant to comment on a speaker that I had not heard; however this is right in line with my limited experience with full range drivers.
I started in speaker building with some Jordans JX92 drivers because I liked the concept of no crossover and the positive control of an amp connected directly to the driver.
After listening to them, I said "these need a tweeter"; and added a tweeter. After extended listening, I said "these need a woofer". I still like to start by picking a wide range mid and adding a complementary tweeter and woofer.
I can not imagine that a 3" will give a high range that is acceptable, especially off-axis. It will also not give the impact and "slam" necessary to reproduce drums and whatever.
It may be an excellent mid-range and may sound intriguing without passive crossover components. But it can not cover the full range. I also don't know how they can compensate for the baffle step without a crossover; it looks they did a port or transmission line to boost the bass (even into the 300 hz range or beyond).
I think three ways with active crossovers is the way to go. They have the benefits of this configuration, but with drivers scaled to their freq. range.

Is it a physical impossibility or are horses not that "into" Archbishops?

or as a transmission line to get the bass spl numbers
