He had these computer programs and experience, and I had the tools and cash. So after taking me to a couple highend H/T stores to show me just how pricey this stuff can be, he ordered components from PE. Unfortunately for me, my friend then got a job out of state! So here I am with NO IDEA of how to do ANYTHING, with a wife tapping her foot at my $600 pile of PE boxes in the basement. Not good. I then discovered Tech Talk. After wringing my hands in desperation and crying my eyes out for help, the guys here pointed me to Pete Schumacher, who was very familiar with the drivers my buddy Joe had ordered. Pete had xo plans all ready, with a baffle connection for his particular build. So, with Petes help, and John Stockman, and others, I managed to pull off a completion. So if anyone is in a similar situation, this forum WILL help you get your job completed!!!
Thanks again guys for all the great advice!!! http://s517.photobucket.com/albums/u...ever%20ending/
Holy c-r-a-p, your skills are amazing! Very nice. Glad I could help out, but Pete deserves the credit for the XO, probably the most important part, and credit to your excellent cabinet-making ability. Will you be taking them to one of the DIY events?

Does anyone have an idea for grill covers? I'd like to use a metal screen, if possible. I have a 2 year old, and, well, they NEED protection! And thanks for the compliments, guys!

I do plan on being there. You gonna bring those beauties?

Re: It is FINISHED! (almost) and THANKS TO ALL!
I'll bring em, Pete! My receiver is almost as confusing as making these speakers! I really want to hear these thru another set-up. But I am def. planning on going to Indie! Maybe I'll bring a newly designed curved-sided sub and center channel to match! I had a dream about the sub today! I think I figured out how to put 12" subs in a curved side.

Just, WOW. Makes my cabs embarrassing. I would bet they are amazing.

Very nicely done! Your cabinetry is top notch! I really like your reliefs for the binding posts, and I am impressed with the courage you showed on taking the backs to a point like that. That is the mark of a fearless woodworker!
You have my respect and admiration on a unique design that was expertly executed!

Top notch. I'm jealous. I hope that some day I slow down long enough to work on a design that ambitious.

Re: It is FINISHED! (almost) and THANKS TO ALL!
Beautiful build! Of course your wife *actually* likes them - they are great looking and great sounding too no doubt. Skillful build and nice thought process on how to make everything work right (tight fit, clean seems, etc.).

I call these the Schumakubin IIs in Petes honor.

Where're you at?
InDIYana is normally held in Richmond, IN, though Brian/I hosted it last year up in Auburn for some diversity in location. I have heard the original Schumakubins at InDIYana 2007, though those were clamped and unsealed in that occasion. I hope to meet you and see your handiwork in person!
Later,

D, Rose, those cabinets are beautiful. What kind of resin did you use in the curved panels? How do you get the air out without vacuum bagging?

Andy, good to see you. You built some of the most unusual speakers back in the day. Are you still building? Do you have project/product page? By the way, how is your little finger now?

Re: It is FINISHED! (almost) and THANKS TO ALL!
hey, Mr. Wizard!
I used West End Systems epoxy between 7 layers of hardboard for the sides and top. Its marine-grade epoxy, so if I go to sea I can take the Schumakubin IIs with me. A sponge roller gives the most uniform coating. I cant say enough about the epoxy! I thought about a vac. press, but I thought clamping one side on a radius form then bending the pieces would create equal pressure all the way round. That was by biggest concern, equal pressure. Cutting the tops and bottoms to size showed uniform joints and no air gaps. I was very happy about that. Another thing I noticed after pulling a "side" off the form, was how rigid that side was. It was amazing after I epoxyed the two sides together. That point in the back has a pretty steep angle, and that made for a very large epoxy surface. The epoxy actually penetrated the hardboard, not enough to swell the joints, but enough to make the glue joint incredibly strong. The only screws in those speakers are the ones holding the drivers in place.
This was my first speaker project, and it was so much fun thinking out the build challenges, I'll have to do more! I have ZERO Technical Knowledge of xo design or any other aspect of speaker building. This worked 'cause Pete Schumacher did all the thinking. I just modified the box. So if anyone out there has a solid driver/xo design and would like to see them in a "different" box, drop me a line! I love a challenge!

Some of the nicest looking and best executed box building that I have seen to date...to be sure. Nice job. .....and I thought truncated pyramids with mitered corners were hitting the "big time" in cabinetry....Dude, those cabs visually ROCK!
John
If it doesn't fit right the first time, you obviously need to use a larger hammer.

Very nice. Very solid looking. I bet that cabinet is super rigid. I would love to have a friend like you near by to learn from.

They do appear well bonded. I can see how one might get the air out by making contact on one side, and "rolling" that contact to the other, rather like applying veneer or wallpaper. Did you do it layer by layer? How much epoxy was pressed out?
How "dead" are panels? I am sure they are quite stiff with the rigid epoxy, but I suppose they might still ring at a high frequency. When I was considering curved panels years ago, I planned to use a visco-elastic in the center for shear-mode damping. Like most of my plans from the time I never built it, but I believe the concept is sound.
