Congrats Paul C., InDIYana, a pick axe and Carolina dreamin'
I'm back online FINALLY!!! I've been absent far too long due to a lot of stuff that has just kept building up and up and finally I'm making headway to getting my sh!+ squared away again.
First, I have to add my congrats to Paul C. on the newb. One day later and I would have been happy as could be to share my b-day with Lucy Rae. Precious thing you have there.
Second, I've been in the middle of getting InDIYana plans started. As I said some time ago I would let everyone know by the end of February (almost there) if I were going to be hosting it. So far the answer is yes. I'm looking at a date of April 23 and 24th here in Richmond, Indiana. More info as I get it together. I hope a lot of folks can make it to the show and I do apologize for announcing things a lot later than I really like.
Third, is the big reason why I've been MIA for so long. It came down to my being handcuffed by a POS D-Link router. I got my Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station today and HOLY SHIZNIT!!! Yeah, it's pricey but yeah it is worth every penny I spent on it. Wireless range out the wazoo (can pick it up on my iPhone from a block away which seems really crazy) and I finally can get the router to manage things properly, something the D(uh)-Link never quite "got". The one thing it did get though was the business end of one of these:

Good riddance to bad news.
Fourth, and it's a doozy, is that it's looking like I might have one more Indiana winter in my future as I'm planning to make a move out of the area. I had a long talk with my recently retired mom and she threw out the idea of moving south and asked if I would consider it too. Ya know, it sounds like a pretty good idea to me actually. She's the only family I have around here and given the current deep doldrums Indiana is experiencing when it comes to opportunities for a guy with my skills I might as well try it. We have quite a bit of family concentrated in North Carolina and a few other places on the east coast so it would be nice to be closer to them as well.
It's not going to happen before the fall at the absolute earliest and might be after the end of 2010 but it is gonna happen one way or another unless an absolute momentous change happens here in Hoosierland.
Oh and Gowa, I've found some data on the Dyanvox 6.5" woofer. I'll send it out tomorrow evening once I get things package up nice and tidy like.

Get on with it Man! Why wait 'til the fall? Start your adventure ASAP.
A day earlier and Lucy would have shared my Birthday.
Take care,

Yeah, D(uh)-Link about sums it up. I hate those things. I've got a Netgear wireless g that has been flawless since I got it, but I know that it's not anywhere near the range of your AirPort (my BlackBerry loses it just as I pull out of the garage in the morning).
Good that you're back online and solid!

What pi$$es me off the most is that I was cornered into using the D-Link at the incessant insistence of my ISP's local support franchise computer shop. They said no other brand of router would work correctly. Seeing how I was pretty new to the WiMax game I figured I better err on the side of caution and use a brand of router I had bad times with in the past. D-Link makes some good stuff, yeah, but I just don't like how their routers work and the management of their functions are rather murky at times. Oh did I mention this computer shop knows exactly zilch about Apple gear and could care less? I had one of their techs calling me a few times in the past with some questions about the server software and configurations. I should have sent an invoice.
Yeah I called them out on their BS after talking to the real tech support guys at my ISP's main office. The dude there was absolutely puzzled why they had told me that in the first place and basically hit the nail on the head when he suggested they had a contract deal with D-Link. Found out later he was very right.
So now I can actually do what I've been wanting to do for quite a long time. I can finally EASILY remotely connect to my main Mac Pro desktop from anywhere I have internet connection for one thing. Before it was always a crap shoot if my old router hadn't gone senile and dropped my port permission settings and I couldn't see my home machine by any means.
The final straw was when the junky piece of junky junk flat-out wouldn't play nice with my WiMax modem and sent me and the tech support guy chasing shadows thinking that the modem had gone belly up for some unknown reason. So here I sit with a kickin' great new wireless router with b/g/n, dual radio and a connected 1 TB HDD and a new modem. Oh and wireless printing is the nicest thing I could have ever wished for. I can FINALLY print from my laptop.

Guess we'll have to have a NCDIY now! I made the move from IN to NC many years ago and love it here. Still a Colts and Hoosiers fan though.
