    Default Denon SC-M-37 Speakers Gutted

I've been saving this for a slow day, and while I am waiting to get on the road to Ft. Wayne, here are some pics of the pair of Denon Speaks I got with a mini-system.

These are very sturdy braced little cabs wrapped in vinyl laminate that is sorta simulated cherry wood. Drivers look to be Peerless/Vifa/Tymphany type. These sound pretty good, but are a little scratchy on top. Having a look at the Farfield FR curve, there is a bit of lift in the top octave that is probably causing that. At first, I thought: "cheap tweeter" but I think a simple parallel RC on the tweet will bring them from "fair mid-fi" to "pretty good."

Looks pretty solid. Decent drivers and a real crossover. What price level did the system sell at?

Seriously, a braced cabinet, real crossover, decent drivers, I'm kind of impressed. Usually, when I open up some generic commercial setup I'm amazed at the lack of "guts".

Even my B&W 602's have only a single coil on the woofer.

Denon remains a silent competitor to "high end" brands - and they usually make a better product, too.

That's because B&W is the Bose of the high end world, or at least anything they build under 5,000 dollars is. Stereophile has measured quite a few models and they all have weird FR curves, crazy impedance plots...

I am not surprised at those Denon speakers. They have benefitted as much from advances in computer modeling, chinese advances in quality, etc etc that DIY has plus they have deeeeep pockets.

You take apart a $200 pair of Infinity Primus speakers you'll find similar insides. NHT, too.

This was my hotel stereo while I was working in CA for 4 months. When I bought it, I expected the speakers to stink, while the receiver/CD player/amp to be standard upper-midlevel Denon quality. I was really surprised; these'll be good with a little high cut and maybe a little more damping in the box...
