Thread: tweeter swap

  1. #1

    Default tweeter swap

Greetings and apologies for another tritrix question. A search in the archives beared no fruit. I'm looking to swap the Dayton's DC28F-8 out of the tritrix speakers that I built. I'm hoping there is a plug/drop-in (size/spec.)replacement that will improve the sound. Overall enjoying them, but upstream the gear has improved and feel the tweeters may now be the weak link.

    Regards, David-

Have you tried reversing the polarity of the tweeter????? That may help you some, if not you might check Madisounds tweeter listings or you can allways look through Fee-bay!

I don't want to speak for Curt, as he may have something up his sleeve, but the standard answer is- If you change any of the drivers, it's almost always a different speaker requiring tweaking or a completely different crossover. There are a few exceptions...this is probably not one of them.

You may also want to consider that a "better" tweeter may do nothing to improve the upper midrange/lower treble region. That's related to the top end of the woofer through the crossover region. The standard Dayton drivers are not known for low levels of distortion, but rather for their good performance at that price point. Your tastes may have exceeded the capabilities of this design.

You want to build some new speakers....right?

I recall back when I building and reading about the design a few people were not big fans of the tweeter. An exellent value, but not the most refined sound. Some recordings can be a tad bright/harsh at times. I picked a specific cartridge on my turntable to combat this. Others felt the speaker didn't go low enough while I felt it did well for my needs. Overall, still a fine speaker and have been really enjoying them. And no, I'm not in the market for a build right now. The next step up would have to be a big one. Right now I'm trying to just enjoy the music.
