Default Possible option for the RSS line?

I was wondering if perhaps the RSS line could be offered sans dustcap? A phase plugged version for "indoor" use perhaps?

The reason I'm pondering this is that it has been suggested that the dustcap is a source of bad behavior in the 1-3KHz range. I know there are other factors to consider with phase plugs with air noise and such, but would it be a non-starter because of that? After all, the RS270 is phase plugged.

And if the dust cap is a must, could there possibly be some damping material added to the cap to control the breakup?

Might be a real cheap "fix" to get improved performance from an already admirable driver.

Would it be possible to remove the dust cap spray or brush a damping material on the back side then reapply it? Saw in your other post about looking ugly if you applied it on the front.

I was thinking of some kind of coating, maybe latex, that could go on uniform and smooth to retain the sheen of the current material. But like you said, apply the damping material to the inside of the cap, but before it's permanently fixed to the cone.

Is there a spray on material that you could build up layers without it looking too nasty? Maybe a coating or three of wet look? Anyone familiar with the characteristics of this stuff? Does it stay in place like paint, or will it run to the bottom of the dust cap?

Of course I don't have a clue as to the cause of the mis-behavior, but it might not be the dust cap at all, but a cavity resonance from the space behind the cap...

The dust cap probably provides a lot of reinforcement for the cone. I'd just go ugly with mass damping, not uniform coating. Maybe something that looks like the accuton thumbnails.
