Peerless 830586 M&K buyout Sub build...
I'm pretty new to "real" DIY audio, been tinkering for a couple decades. So here is my build.
The driver used is the 8" M&K buyout woofer (299-246) aka. Peerless 830586. Amplifier is the Dayton 100watt plate. The enclosure is approx. 2.5cu.ft. net volume (20"h x 12"w x 20"d inside= 2.7cu.ft.) with a 3" diameter by 3.75" long PVC port. Tuning it to about 32Hz. I know it's a huge box for an 8" driver, but for the price it's acceptable. Unfortunately, the damping material can cost as much as the driver LOL. I modeled this using BassBox Pro with 6dB/Oct +3dB at 35Hz to guess at room gain and output looks pretty flat from 90Hz down to 30Hz, see attached graph.
After fiddling with room placement and the 2 knobs on the amp, this thing rocks! It sounds great with my 22l vented Tritrix pair. In fact, I think I'm gonna cut down the Tritrix cabinets to about 10l. sealed just to shrink them. I haven't tried any home theater duty yet to test explosions, but I did play Chevelle- Comfortable Liar which has some low stuff in the "chorus" that destroys my store bought KLH 12" 200watt junk subwoofer. The $24 Peerless woofer is very competent. Gonna buy more. My next sub will use a boosted amp to allow a smaller Vb, approx 1.6cu.ft. I'm curious to do a comparison...

Nice to hear these woofer work well. That is a substantial box for an 8.
I bought 4 of them for $20 each when they were the DOTD. I haven't had time to do anything with them while I try to finish up some other projects. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with them.

In general, it's not a good idea to boost a vented box. You have to look at your Xmax, max SPL, power, Vb, and tuning to see where you'll get into trouble. You should also include the plate amp's low pass filter in your box model.

Yes, heavy and awkward. I should put handles on it. At 2.5cu.ft. it also is looking pretty good for a Dayton Classic 12 sub for a future alteration. As for the Peerless 830586, another one may be slated for my car in a 1.25cu.ft. box tuned to 35Hz. I can't believe what a nice driver this is for $24.

At this time, I don't have an accurate way to measure the plate amp's output. So, I'm hoping that it's pretty flat with a low pass cut-off point (12dB/oct?) that doesn't effect the curve too much below it's setting. Wishful thinking maybe, but it does sound good to my untrained ears. Thanks for the input and for designing your $55 Nano Neo. They are definitely on my list.

Chris
Chris- it's room gain, not amp-boost.
