Default ZX Spectrum: HiVi M6A + BG Neo3 PDRW

I had the M6A on-hand while working on the CC for the Swope HT. I thought to myself, "This intriguing-looking driver might be an interesting companion to the BG Neo3." That was a good idea I had.

I've been listening to these constantly for the last month or two, and am just so pleased. Sadly, I have to take it apart because the drivers are going to their new home. But I thought I'd publish the design first, if just for posterity's sake. Who knows, maybe someone's looking for a contemporary-looking 2-way with a well-balanced sound suitable to pretty much all listening styles. maybe something off the beaten path of the Dayton RS180.

    I added the FR graph.
It's crossed just shy of 2000 Hz. Don't try this at home, kids.

Yes, for all intents and purposes, you have the trademark on that one. I just had to do it this time to fit the theme. I thought of you when I did it.

And now I'm gonna try real hard not to name my speakers after ancient computers anymore.

    Nonsense!

I, for one, want to build a big 3-way called "The Colossus" and a single-driver speaker called the "Zuse".

Nice design Paul and a fairly low component count on the XO as well. Given the low sensitivity of the M6's, a 2.5 system would really shine with those drivers.

How bout naming the newer designs on obsolete game systems?.......

How could you possibly skip the "T/S" 1000?

Not sure where the name came from 'cause IIRC it actually had 2048 bytes of ram, and didn't it come from The Land Down Under?

What on earth is going on with the tweeter phase? I note this seems to show up in your designs. What causes that?

Oh. Yeah, that does happen to me a lot. I think it comes in the file conversion. I measure in JustMLS, where the phase looks normal. Then I take the file into Response Modeler and "boost" the SPL by 100 dB or so (to bring it up to the mfr spec). Then, for some reason it gets strange values every time the phase wraps 180 degrees. Maybe Jeff knows why this is.

There are a few possbilities, there: that the rendering for those files naturally smooths things by 1/24th or 1/12th octave, which would effectively eliminate those spikes (unsmoothed FR/phase look a lot like that) - or there's some logarithmic nastiness going on ..

Paul: I'm very intrigued. What is the sensitivity on these?

Can you get the sensitivity just by looking at the response graph? i.e. if the response falls within 80 and 85db for the most part, is that also the sensitivity?

I am really admiring at the simplicity of the crossover.
Humm, I wonder how would Klipsch 6.5 buyout would sound in this arrangement with minor modification of the XO. PE says K 6.5 has the same sensitivity as this HIVi driver.

    Paul,

One question about the 8 ohm series resistor in the tweeter high pass. If I reduce the reistance to 6 or 4 ohms, would the slope of the high pass change?

    Thanks in advance
