    Default My TV stand project

I've had some Vifa/Infinity buyout speakers laying around forever and finally decided to do something with them. I had originally planned on making a WMTMW pair out of them, but needed a different front stage for my new apartment.

I have always liked the idea of speakers integrated into furniture, so I decided to build a stand for my TV that would house the electronic components and the right, left, and center channels. Since I had four woofers, four mids, and two tweeters, I chose to make the right and left channels a WMT and the center the WMTMW, all I had to do was buy an extra tweeter.

I used PCD to design the crossovers, and everything sounded like it should upon testing.

The mainframe is 3/4" MDF, while the front baffle is some stout 1.5" plywood I acquired for free. The baffle will be angled 6 degs to aim towards the listener, and will have a 45 degree cut on the corners. Once assembled, I will sand and prime, then paint with black textured rattle can.

The woodwork was coming along fine until my craftsman router gave up the ghost. I ordered some parts from sears and hope to be back up and running shortly.

Make sure you add some vertical bracing into the center channel area. You will not want the enclosure top sagging overtime if you have weight above it.

Interesting idea though. Keep us updated!

I like this idea...It reminds me of an "old school" console - sans the clunky record player and low-power tube amp.

Looks good. I'd veneer and stain/poly it for sure though. You could really have that thing looking like a nice piece of furniture!

Whoa!! That commutator's toast! Hope you ordered one of those too. Bad commutators love (to eat) new brushes.

I think it needs a cooler name. Other than that, it looks like it's coming along nicely. I can't wait to see/hear it when it's done. Maybe I'll have to plan a special road trip... unless you drop out and come home sooner.

Finally! Got the router back up and running, it seems to work as well as it did new, which is not saying much.. but at least i've been able to make some sawdust.

This plywood for the baffle is 1.5" thick, so I had to take out some wood on the rear so the mids and woofers can breathe a little bit.

Today I also got the sub-enclosures cut and fitted for the mids and tweets.

@ Anunnaki - Because of your suggestion, I put a divider behind that sub-enclosure for the center channel to support the top. I also put one more brace in the large part of each woofer enclosure. Should be plenty strong!

I put some dynamat pieces I had laying around on the panel, then foam. The rest of the foam I cut up and put in the woofer enclosures. I'll also put in some polyfil before i'm done.

I also got the crossovers glued in. Gotta love gobs of hot glue! The last batch of glue I bought takes forever to cool, hence the overflowing gobs. Its strong though, so should work fine.

Finally, I cut slots for biscuits in the baffle pieces and glued it together. I'll continue tomorrow...

@ Tobin - I ain't gonna be droppin' out anytime soon, you better come for a visit! I can't think of a better name than TV stand... maybe you could come up with something...

    This is looking really cool!

Though it becomes a more permanent fixture, etc. It is a really cool idea!

It is like a console TV with the picture being removable

If you have already glued on the baffle, ignore this post. With your mid chambers I would still suggest additional bracing. I do not care for cabinet resonances or at least keeping them a a lower less noticeable level. Mid range speakers typically contribute most heavily to this area.

For the small cost of a few MDF strips it can go a long way at reducing cabinet coloration.

Ok things are moving along! I pulled off the clamps and crap and used bondo and wood filler to fill in all the brad holes and voids in the plywood.

after a good amount of sanding, it was prime time to prime. this is after the first coat I think.

After a few more, my wife and I painted it. I had originally planned on a black textured paint, but we were at the home depot and saw a dark brown stone texture paint which we thought would look really good with our dark brown furniture. So thats what we did. It looks a lot lighter in this outside picture. Believe me, its pretty dark. This thing is massive! I used 6 cans for about 3 good coats. It looks really good.

Here's a few more pictures inside my shed/workshop. The color in the pictures is off, but in real life it is perfect.

Tonight I also made the grille frames. I'll use black grille cloth, and I think that will make a nice looking contrast and match our black TV.

I'm getting closer and closer to completion, hopefully within a day or so!

Anunnaki - I'm using PE heavy duty grill guides that i've had laying around. I had to trim them down to fit the .25" grill material, but no biggie. I'm hoping to be done by tomorrow, but we'll see what happens!

I did the same thing when I used those guides, and it worked just fine, and is still holding after several years. I figured if I did it again, I would put some 1/4 inch thick spots on the grill to attach them, I kind of like the look with the grill held out from the cab.

Well, the box is 99% done and inside my home right now, grills are done... but I have to wait until this dang acrylic latex caulk plus silicone dries. I just grabbed it off the shelf, thinking it would work fine (and i'm sure it will once it has cured), but this is taking forever! The tube says 7-14 days... Oh well, i'll just wait til its done.

Very cool project, but I have to ask... why the heck do you have a picture of David Hasselholf in a banana hugger and leather jacket in your imageshack folder for???????? You have a wife so I'm guessing you don't swing that way. Just having fun so don't take this that the wrong way

The Hoff?? Shoot, I thought I had deleted that one... haha, I actually went to my imageshack pictures to make sure he wasn't there.

On a serious note, still waiting for the silicone to cure... I put female disconnects on the wire today, drilled pilots for the screws, all I have to do is mount the speakers. Here's a pic with the grills on, but no speakers underneath.

I'll probably mount the speakers tomorrow or Sunday, we'll see how the caulk is by then.

I decided this morning that the caulk was just about there, so I went ahead and mounted the speakers! It looks awesome and sounds even better! I'm really happy with the way this turned out. I'm excited to watch some movies and listen to some music!

that really turned out well. congradulations on the compleation. maybe in the future you could get a 7 or 9.1 with the upper position to widen the soundstage up front.
