Inductor Selection Opinions
Hello everyone. I am new to the forum, yet a long time parts-express customer.
After years of wanting to build the Cynosure CC speaker... I finally have a reason to justify the project. My question is about the recommended parts list that the speaker is built with. Since this speaker design was added to the DIY section quite some time ago, I figured maybe parts-express' selection/inventory has change to include a better selection of crossover components. My main concern is the 8mH inductor, part #266-576. Would 255-290 or 266-854 be a better option? Since it's such a low crossover point, and only a 6db slope at that, would I ever be able to tell the difference? The price difference is small, so I would gladly "upgrade"... but not if it is absolutely not worth the change.
Now the same question, but applied to the 14mH inductor in the design: 266-952 (If there is even an air core replacement. Might have to modify/unwind a coil to make 14mH?)
Thanks for any help you can provide! It might sound like a dumb question to some... but for the few crossovers I have built myself, I've never played with air core vs. solid core to know any sonic difference. I'm hoping some of you have done the work for me!
Thanks again.
Mike

Re: Inductor Selection Opinions
Those inductors are what always turned me off of that project. You could buy a couple of those buyout subwoofer crossovers. They contain two 9.6 mH coils. Unwind a bit (I have no idea how much) and save quite a bit of money right there.
For the 14mH, check out the 19 awg series at Erse Audio. Maybe they have one.

I'd use whatever was in the original design. All DCRs were accounted for in the XO and box model.

I did not even take into account the DCR difference. Very good point.
The difference would be very minute, less than 1 ohm... but different nevertheless.
