Default Looking for good CHEAP drivers for Line Array

Hi All, I just completed an Open Baffle, Line Array, Econowave project and the guy who helped me wants to do the same.

I had 16 of the gold colored NSB close outs for years back and used those. Can't find those anymore, so what are good drivers, 4" type, and cheap, that would work well in a LA?

This was my first foray into Line Arrays, so I don't know what is out there. They also have to be usable of Open Baffle. Cheers.

Meniscus has some 3" drivers that are very cheap. You might take a look at them.

Thanks from both those ideas. I guess it is hard to look at those level ($$$) drivers when I paid 69 cents for the ones I am using now. I am really hoping for a 2 to 3 dollar speacial. Keep the ideas coming though. Much appreciated. Cheers.

These Jamos might be a possibility. Not sure if you could do them without something on the bottom end and/or top end.

This says it all, 3" from meniscus, and Onkyo tweeter from Parts Express. Lots of fun. I only have 1 panel fabbed, and im not sure how the final project will turn out, but first listen was enjoyable.

The Rowe 3" cheapies from Meniscus are fine, considering that they are 10 cents each, but currently having 40 of them running, they need help. The high Qts (2.8) and the Fs of 217Hz mean they have a huge turn-on bump. I tweaked this with a series notch (resonant peak filter) with some huge coils I had laying around that cost more than the drivers and a series cap. Honest no breakup response from these is from 250-2Khz before they start exhibiting issues. My lines are going in the garage with inexpensive bass bins and a single supertweeter to be even cheaper, but will show up at a DIY just for fun. I had fun with them and they weren't wasted, and they do show the amazing potential of a line array. Listen to a single 3" junker on a baffle, then 20 in series/parallel

For fun they can't be beat, but if you are looking for a real hifi setup, the HiVi B3's would be good, as would the smaller Tang Bands. More $ though and you will still need a bass bin and tweeters.

    Cheers / Robert

You could end up waiting a while for another super-cheap driver like that and even then the driver is most likely going to be so bad that a good MT setup would be a much better solution. The Vifa recommendation above isn't very expensive considering the performance you could get out of 8 of those per side.

That being said, if it's not what you want it's not what you want.
