Driscoll (Iowa DIY entry) sneak peak...
I burned through a few places and some other places look like crapola but someday I will just lay another couple coats of black and rub 'em out again. In any event:

Cell phone pics, they look better that way The backs are done 1/2 arsed too. My arm got tired.

I know the tweeter, but what's the woofer? (The tweeter is in my entry too).

Every time I see Johnny's Driscolls it throws me off because I used to work with a guy named John Driscoll. I don't work there any more but if I did I'd have to tell that guy there is a speaker somewhere named after him.

Looking good! Can't wait to hear them...and Marty's too. I have a pair of those tweeters on the shelf waiting to be deployed.
That old Grain Belt can reminds me of a neighbor across the street when I was a kid. He drank it like water!

Long ago I am sure. My dad found it in an attic of an old building he was upgrading to central air. Some worker way back when must have had one in his lunch bucket.

You've got more patience than me. I'll never do a high gloss finish again (unless it involves money or lurid enticements)

I noticed the can immediately. My grandfather always used to have (45 or so years ago) a 1/4 or 1/2 barrel on tap in the basement. Depended on whether he was expecting other relatives over. Myself, never been much
of a beer drinker!

Lou, I learned something from this build. I am never going to use gloss paint again to make a gloss finish. I tried exact same technique on some "satin" finish stuff I had sitting around and they turned out as shiny with a lot less work.
Whiskey - glad I could stir a memory

That is one sharp looking monitor, even if does have small flaws. Is it sealed?

Thank you, it is rear ported.

very nice johnny. i love pictures, for that exact reason - makes my work look better than it actually is . care to share more details of the finish (materials, procedure, etc)? or will that be part of an upcoming, non sneak peak, post iowa thread? i always find it interesting to hear the different ways people achieve piano black finishes.

It will be after Iowa, but there are really no secrets - just a lot of careful work.

Eh... Weakest aspect of it's performance. It has weird T/S parameters which, on the surface appear to like a sealed but it models decently in a small ported. In my alignment, I get to ~60 Hz but I have it highpassed a little higher than that because on paper it can go that low, but in application... Let's just say this would make a fine midbass for a tower with an active subwoofer section cutting in at 100 Hz. I am pretty sure I am pushing it at 80 Hz. It would be (IMHO) outstanding as a midrange in a large 3-way. It has plenty of Xmax for a driver this size but there is zero voice coil or spider venting, so all that Xmax is pretty much overkill since the uglies kick in before Xmax is hit. On the other hand, it is reasonably sensitive (even for a 4 ohm driver) and very little cone break-up to deal with.
Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with this driver that is a huge concern. Not a hi-fidelity driver by any means, but it seems pleasant enough. Just remember the $7 price tag and everything falls into perspective
